The main reason for learning about math is to become a better problem solver in all aspects of life. Many problems are multistep and require some type of systematic approach. There are a couple of things you need to do when solving problems. Ask yourself exactly what type of information is being asked for: Is it one of addition, subtraction, multiplication , or division? Then determine all the information that is being given to you in the question.
Mathematician George Pólya’s book, “ How to Solve It: A New Aspect of Mathematical Method ,” written in 1957, is a great guide to have on hand. The ideas below, which provide you with general steps or strategies to solve math problems, are similar to those expressed in Pólya’s book and should help you untangle even the most complicated math problem.
Use Established Procedures
Learning how to solve problems in mathematics is knowing what to look for. Math problems often require established procedures and knowing what procedure to apply. To create procedures, you have to be familiar with the problem situation and be able to collect the appropriate information, identify a strategy or strategies, and use the strategy appropriately.
Problem-solving requires practice. When deciding on methods or procedures to use to solve problems, the first thing you will do is look for clues, which is one of the most important skills in solving problems in mathematics. If you begin to solve problems by looking for clue words, you will find that these words often indicate an operation.
Look for Clue Words
Think of yourself as a math detective. The first thing to do when you encounter a math problem is to look for clue words. This is one of the most important skills you can develop. If you begin to solve problems by looking for clue words, you will find that those words often indicate an operation.
Common clue words for addition problems:
Common clue words for subtraction problems:
- How much more
Common clue words for multiplication problems:
Common clue words for division problems:
Although clue words will vary a bit from problem to problem, you'll soon learn to recognize which words mean what in order to perform the correct operation.
Read the Problem Carefully
This, of course, means looking for clue words as outlined in the previous section. Once you’ve identified your clue words, highlight or underline them. This will let you know what kind of problem you’re dealing with. Then do the following:
- Ask yourself if you've seen a problem similar to this one. If so, what is similar about it?
- What did you need to do in that instance?
- What facts are you given about this problem?
- What facts do you still need to find out about this problem?
Develop a Plan and Review Your Work
Based on what you discovered by reading the problem carefully and identifying similar problems you’ve encountered before, you can then:
- Define your problem-solving strategy or strategies. This might mean identifying patterns, using known formulas, using sketches, and even guessing and checking.
- If your strategy doesn't work, it may lead you to an ah-ha moment and to a strategy that does work.
If it seems like you’ve solved the problem, ask yourself the following:
- Does your solution seem probable?
- Does it answer the initial question?
- Did you answer using the language in the question?
- Did you answer using the same units?
If you feel confident that the answer is “yes” to all questions, consider your problem solved.
Tips and Hints
Some key questions to consider as you approach the problem may be:
- What are the keywords in the problem?
- Do I need a data visual, such as a diagram, list, table, chart, or graph?
- Is there a formula or equation that I'll need? If so, which one?
- Will I need to use a calculator? Is there a pattern I can use or follow?
Read the problem carefully, and decide on a method to solve the problem. Once you've finished working the problem, check your work and ensure that your answer makes sense and that you've used the same terms and or units in your answer.

Polya’s model offers four principles for solving different mathematical problems. The first principle is to “understand the problem”. At this stage, the learner thinks of the best “strategy” to find a solution. The second principle is “devising a conceptual plan”.
The stage helps learners to consider the best strategies to get a solution. The third stage is “carrying out the plan”. This stage entails using the selected plan or choosing a better strategy. The fourth principle is “looking back”. At this stage, the learner examines what he or she has done to obtain the “solution”.
Problem solving in mathematics is vital because it helps learners develop high-order thinking and analytical skills. The learners also become critical thinkers and address the problems encountered in life.
Learners use various strategies to solve mathematical problems. The first one is “model drawing”. The strategy involves the use of visual effects. For example, learners required to add 5 to 2 would draw 5 and 2 cars to get 7. The other strategy is “drawing a picture”.
A learner can draw pictures when adding numbers. For example, a child can draw three and two pens to get five. The third strategy is “making a systematic list”. Systematic “lists” can help learners memorize numerical numbers. For example, a child expected to write numbers 1 to 10 could make a systematic list of items from one to ten.
The fourth strategy is “working backwards” as explained in this example. Jimmy spent five dollars to remain with five dollars. How many dollars did he have in total? The child will work from $5 and add 5 to get $10.
Learner in different grades will use these strategies differently. The first strategy is “drawing a picture”. A second grade science learner can use the method to solve mathematical problems as follows: A carpenter makes four pieces from a wood. How many cuts does she make?
The learner will draw a piece of wood and divide it into four pieces. The child will get three “cuts”. A sixth grade learner can use the strategy as follows: In a party, there were three couples. Every person shook each one’s hand once. What was the total number of handshakes? The learner will draw letters to represent the couples and handshakes made.
The second strategy is “working backwards” as presented below. A child had saved some money. His father gave him 10 dollars. He spent 13 dollars to remain with 7 dollars. How much had he saved? From this problem, the learner will begin with 7 dollars. The next thing is to add 13 to get 20. The learner will then subtract the $10 obtained from the father to get 10 dollars.
A sixth grade learner can work backwards to solve the problem below. Agnes, Ann, and Angel had some coins. Agnes gave Ann 12 coins. Ann gave Angel 10 coins while Angel gave Agnes 4 coins. They all had 20 coins. What is the number of everyone’s coins at the beginning? The learner can work backwards from 20 coins to get the answer.
In conclusion, teachers should incorporate problem-solving activities into instruction because they help sharpen the learners’ skills and competencies. The methods can also make the learning process easier. The learners can use these strategies to achieve mastery and proficiency in mathematics problem solving.
These general heuristics for problem solving are important because they can help people become critical thinkers. Such activities can help learners develop the best interactional and decision-making skills. They also provide skills for dealing with challenges in life.

The research project will take place at Johnson Elementary School located within Montgomery, Alabama, serving Pre-K through sixth grade students. The administration structure of the school has one principal, assistant principal, and two counselors. The staff is comprised of 40 certified teachers, 2 physical education teachers, and 15 support staff (Alabama Department of Education, 2010).
The student population in this school is approximately 900 students consisting of 55% girls and 45% boys., the ethnic distribution of the school is approximately 34 % caucasian, 10 % hispanic, 25 % african american, 10 % asian, and 9 % other., the school’s current mathematics curriculum follows the alabama mathematics content standards., at the end of the fifth grade, students will have improved on competencies in the four fundamental arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication) and applying these operations to decimals, fractions, as well as positive and negative numbers., students are expected to be skilled in using common measurements in determining area, length and volume of basic geometrical figures. they are also expected to apply measurement concepts to angles using tools such as the compass and protractor in solving problems (alabama department of education, 2010)., involved in this project will be two fifth grade classrooms and their teachers., one class will be assigned as the control group (class receiving no direct math vocabulary instruction) and the other class will be designated as the experimental group (class receiving direct math vocabulary instruction., both classes have relatively similar achievement level in math and roughly the same student characteristics., the writer has been a math teacher for 16 years and is presently a substitute teacher of fifth grade students at the present elementary school., the writer’s responsibility as a substitute teacher in math is not only to instruct students on mathematical concepts and operations., the writer tries to motivate students and determine what their true needs are in order to be able to assist them more effectively with learning., the writer will facilitate the implementation of the proposed mathematics vocabulary instruction to the target fifth grade classes., chapter ii: study of the problem, many students fail chapter tests particularly in world problems., many students function below grade level on tests., many students earn low report card grades in math., problem documentation, vocabulary proficiency is an important aspect in math learning., math learners have to establish a separate vocabulary in order to understand and communicate the language of mathematics., researchers have estimated that by the time learners are through with the fourth grade, they will have to learn more than 500 mathematical symbols and terms (riccomini & witzel, 2009)., failing to understand mathematical terms that they encounter in word problems leads to a loss of ability to solve them (larson, 2007)., math students need to process a word and its various meanings similar to what is practiced in reading (pierce & fontaine, 2009; foster, 2007)., mathematical language is considered important by national research council, which noted that there are five steps toward mathematical proficiency: 1) understanding mathematics; 2) computing fluently; 3) applying concepts to solve problems; 4) reasoning logically; and 5) engaging in mathematics. as such, learning mathematics does not simply involve having to apply its procedures and concepts. rather it is “the all-around ability to communicate mathematically” (riccomini & witzel, 2009, p. 218)., proficiency in the english language is a contributor to low problem-solving skills., in an experimental study involving non-proficient english speakers in the eighth grade, the pre-test and post-test results of the students varied significantly according to their level of proficiency in the english language (brown, 2007)., according to bernardo (2005), ells are disadvantaged when it comes to solving math problems because they have to apply mathematical operations through problems written in a foreign language., lack of confidence in problem solving leads to a decreased capacity of success in mathematics learning., mathematics is considered an abstruse subject and a scary one even from the perspective of the regular student (rossnan, 2006)., newman (2006) insists however that once students are able to penetrate the barrier, they will find that mathematics is “a fairyland which is strange, but makes sense, if not common sense” (p. 41)., research has established that implementing mathematical vocabulary instruction leads to improved problem-solving skills among students., since mathematics itself demands an understanding of language, learners’ capacity to understand the words embedded in the problems influences their problem-solving ability immensely (marzano, 2005)., vocabulary instruction needs to incorporate one or more strategies in order to become effective., according to boon, foren and lowrie (2007), vocabulary instruction using the concept model was a more effective teaching strategy than instruction using the definition model for students with learning disabilities., riccomini and witzel (2009) delineated 6 instructional activities which could assist in developing vocabulary understanding among students. these are: 1. the use of technology and other resources; 2. the use of journaling; 3. teaching the origins of words and their parts; 4. pre-teaching vocabulary before going into the lesson; 5. providing opportunities for practice to increase fluency; 6. the use of graphic organizers., causative analysis, four separate z-tests (one for each of the objectives) will be used to compare pre- and post-implementation percentage data to see whether there is an increase at the .05 level of significance., there has to be word-learning strategies incorporated in vocabulary instruction for it to result to a better comprehension (thompson et al., 2008)., the use of picture books, puzzles, and other creative tools are helpful in making mathematics vocabulary learning not only effective, but interactive and fun as well (coggins et al., 2008; harmon, hendrick & wood, 2005)., there has to be corresponding instruction to enable students to learn in a more organized manner., one recommended in helping students improve their mathematics vocabulary is through organization of concepts (riccomini & witzel, 2009). low achievers struggle because they learn is a disorganized manner. their notes are messy and sometimes difficult to read., b. graphic organizers become helpful. graphic organizers are a technique in letting students organize the information they take in better (kersaint, rubilee, & petkova, 2008). organizing concepts through concept maps will facilitate students’ understanding of how concepts are related with each other. they are also motivational materials that provide an alternative to the traditional note-taking that students usually do..

Based on a report by the National Mathematics Advisory Panel (as cited in Riccomini & Witzel, 2009), practice will help students in overcoming their weakness in automatic recall. It is advised that practice activities be offered to students immediately after material is presented so students can accurately master concepts and definitions (Larson, 2007).
Developing positive attitudes about mathematics through peer, teacher or parental support will reduce children’s fears about math (rossnan, 2006; murray, 2005)., providing opportunities for practice will enhance fluency and helps students retain the definition in their vocabulary. opportunities could come in different activities such group exercises, independent practice, peer tutoring or in game show activities (brown, 2007; thompson et al., 2008)., another idea is to launch direct journaling activities to facilitate vocabulary building. salinas (2005) noted how important journal writing is in building an academic vocabulary in mathematics. according to her, journal writing assists in clarifying student’s thinking and developing a greater understanding of mathematical concepts., description of selected solutions/calendar plan, the selected solution strategy is direct mathematics vocabulary instruction. several strategies to improving the capacity of fifth graders to become problem solvers will be implemented., fifth graders who are struggling with mathematics will receive vocabulary instruction on mathematical terms and concepts using creative strategies which will enable them not only to become more proficient in concepts but to allow them to learn and solve in a more organized manner., fifth graders will be allowed to evaluate their own competencies and attitudes toward math through direct journaling activities (salinas, 2005)., the following steps will be taken., one group will be designated as the control group receiving standard mathematics instruction while another group will be assigned as the experimental group receiving vocabulary instruction., the following vocabulary teaching strategies will be used by the teachers., a glossary of mathematical terms will be built by the students with the help of the teacher (brown, 2007)., vocabulary instruction will use concept maps or other graphic organizers to review and clarify relationships of terms (thompson et al., 2008)., cite this work.

Problem Solving: Use of Math in Our Everyday Life
What I say about math is that I really don’t like it, but at the end of the day through high school math I have learned how to solve problems and not give up when I don’t fully understand something. I dislike math, but I do need it. The reason why I dislike math is that I don’t think it’s stimulating and difficult.
I have asked myself: how do you use math in your everyday life? I am a slow learner when it regards to math and I get a great deal of numbers stirred up. Mathematics is the study of the measurement, properties, and relationships of quantities, using numbers and symbols. Problem-solving is the way to have the option to do every single other part of mathematics, and it also gives a better understanding of the problem at hand. At the point When problem-solving, we learn that there are many different ways to solve a problem and that more than one answer is possible.
It includes the ability to explore, think through an issue, and the explanation coherently to tackle standard just as non-routine issues. For example, in real life, when you get into a contentious, there are numerous approaches to tackle that issue. In the event that you are in a battle, you have the choice to unravel it by talking or you could simply drop it.
Over time, as a math student, I have become more willing to try math and not surrender so effectively. I would always quit if I didn’t understand a problem, some of the time I wouldn’t indeed, even attempt. I felt humiliated, in light of the fact that I felt like everybody around me understood the math, however, I didn’t. I even used to try to do the problems, realizing I had the wrong answers, but I just went along with it to make it seem like I was doing something.
This pattern only happens at the beginning of the year at times when I didn’t even notice everyone in my class, but then when I start talking to my classmates, it changes. This is the point at which I had the option to request help and get individuals once around me. My greatest asset has been the students around me. When I ask my classmates for help, I can get that one-on-one attention I need because the teacher is caught up with helping the entire class. I say I’ve improved because I understand math better now. What’s more, when I don’t get something, presently I attempt every single diverse sort of technique. I am now able to solve a problem before I approach someone for help. But now I won’t give up on problems until I understand them.
Although math was a haze, I realized I needed to complete it, regardless of whether it was by inquiring for help or attempting to complete it. I currently realize that I am someone who consistently attempts and won’t surrender. I am not afraid to ask for help if I need it. Math probably won’t be my best subject any longer, however, I have demonstrated that I can get past it.

Solving The Mathematical Tasks As A Framework For Reflection
In this paper I will be discussing the mathematical task framework, low cognitive demand and high cognitive demand by using two different articles. The research I will be using is from “Mathematical Tasks as a Framework for Reflection: From Research to Practice” by Mary Kay Stein and Margaret Schwan Smith and “Selecting and Creating Mathematical Tasks: From Research to Practice” by Margaret Schwan Smith and Mary Kay Stein. I have been given several different tasks that I have analyzed and put in high cognitive demand or in low cognitive demand. I will explain why I have chosen high or low cognitive demand for each task with using different approaches such as memorization, procedures without connections, procedures with connections, and doing mathematics.

Explain The Use Of Different Problem Solving
Problem-solving involves decision-making is important in Management and leadership.my job at Merseyside police on the CSI team involves a lot of problem-solving and decision-making. Well me are called out to investigate a crime scene taking samples such as DNA and other types of forensic evidence we have to decide if the evidence is relevant to hopefully catch the perpetrators and get a successful conviction. Making a good decision requires a combination of skills, clarity of judgement which is important in my job role. We recently had a meeting regarding problem solving and we identified seven steps to solve problems effectively.
Summary: The Early Learning Standards
This section focuses on the standard, “Children demonstrate strategies for reasoning and problem solving” (Early Childhood Iowa, 2012, p. 99). Through this standard, a child will: show interest in and find a variety of solutions to questions, tasks, or problems; recognize and solve problems through active exploration, including trial and error, and through interactions and discussions with peers and adults; share ideas or make suggestions of how to solve a problem presented by another person. Adults must support these benchmarks by providing opportunities for each child to try new ways of using materials, creating a safe environment with developmentally appropriate materials that offer an appropriate amount of stimulation and choice for each child to explore and play with, allowing each child time to process experiences and information, talking through problems with children to model problem-solving, holding class meetings to discuss issues that may occur and have the children brainstorm solutions, and choosing appropriate materials that promote creativity, self-expression, number, and emerging literacy skills (Early Childhood Iowa,
EFT4 Task7 lesson plan
The teacher will prompt the students with questions. For example, if the students do not know where to begin, the teacher may ask: “What do we do first? We have to underline all the important information in the problem that we need to solve it” - the students will then point out all of the important information for the teacher to underline (i.e. “43-page book”, “first day - 14 pages”, etc.) As with the problem modeled by the teacher, the students will first decide how to demonstrate the problem using counters. As the teacher places and counts the counters on the overhead projector, students can use their own counters to try and solve the problem on their desks. Afterwards, the teacher will help the students make an equation for the problem based on the actions they performed with the counters.
Verbal And Second Graders ' Communication Of Mathematical Thinking, By Kathleen Kostos And Eui Kyung Shin
The author explains how many students, especially those in the focused-upon second grade class, have difficulty explaining their “mathematical thinking process”. While they may provide correct answers using memorized calculations, they are unable to demonstrate their conceptual understandings or explain how they achieved the right results. As stated by the researcher, “it is important for students to be able to demonstrate their mathematical thinking as well as their method of solving a problem” (Kostos & Shin, 2010, p.223).
Problem Solving Instruction Questionnaire For Solving Basic Operations Are Strong And Systemic
The Problem-Solving Instruction Questionnaire was designed to collect data from a range of teachers to learn about math problem-solving instruction in a variety of classrooms. This helped identify effective approaches in teaching, to verify poor performance and lack of strategies with students, and collect any other various input. The data would guide the mathematics intervention to be used and planned.
Integrated 1 And Macdougall Littel Algebra Summary
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. In each section 5.2.1-5.2.3 the students are required to make sense as a group and persevere in solving the problems. Example of the practice is seen in 5.2.1 5-42, 5.2.2 5-59, and 5.2.3 5-74. Each problem in this text is recommended that the students work in groups and there are no formulas, or rules given until the students have reasoned out the problem and solved as a group. By having the student reason and understand, then persevere, the student gains an understanding of the concept in sequences rather that the rule. Given that many of the lesson plans are built around the students making sense of conceptual problems this practice seems to be the focus of the sections. Used beyond moderately, it is the stepping stone to the
Math 106 And Its Effect On Students
When educating students, it is essential to their growth, that teachers have the ability to learn and grow with their students. Every child learns, thinks, and comprehends differently; therefore, the same material should be taught in multiple ways. For example, in my Math 106 class, all students solve the same problem, the teacher then has a few students explain and depict the different ways they received the correct answer. When a student has a difficult time explaining their method, Mrs. Graybeal provides encouragement and guidance; thus. Also, students who are having a difficult time solving the problem used one of the methods provided by a peer to help them comprehend and solve the problem. Math 106 teaches future educators the

Mr. Stepien stated that the reason he has the students formulate questions and writes them on the board is to help the students see the process. He stated the as profesionals we often skip the chart making because we've already developed a pattarn of calling in our minds the important questions we want to consider. He then stated if you watch a really good expert problem solver at work it almost looks invisbale, that thinking process. However, if you watch a good problme solver who gets stuck, you can almost see thier brain go back and say what did I miss. This metacognition thinking about the way they're thinking, has really gotta be devloped in kids. The chart process is a great way for kids to give explicit attention to what thier brain ought

These samples of student’s work support the standards 3.3 and 3.5. For addition, subtraction, multiplication, more or less, and word problems, the student has learned how to do these methods through visual, audio, modeling, guided practice, and individual practice. When teaching the lessons, I used modeling, visual and audio instructional strategies. Once the methods were taught, the student did guided practice and then individual practice. For this student I start with addition problems because they are something he enjoys doing. Once he has done some, I am able to have him complete less desired tasks such as subtraction and word problems.

Problem Solving Approach In Mathematics Teaching
observed that many curriculums or textbooks do not provide an adequate number of non-routine problems from which teachers can choose. This rather affects teachers’ use of problem solving approach in mathematics teaching since they mostly rely on the prescribed textbooks as their source of information (McIntosh, Jarret, & Peixotto, 2000). Such phenomenon is similar in most Ethiopian universities. Moreover, textbooks and assessments regimes used in the school and the time schedule for mathematics lessons are hindrances to the teaching of mathematics through problem solving (Anderson, Sullivan & White,2004). The Principles and Standards states that “Solving problems is not only a goal of learning mathematics but also a major means of doing so… Problem solving is an integral part of all mathematics learning, and so it should not be an isolated part of the mathematics program” (page 32, ¶3). There are three ways that problem solving might be incorporated into mathematics instruction. They include teaching for problem solving, teaching about problem solving, and teaching through problem solving.…
Mathematics Through Problem Solving By Margaret Taplin Summary
In the article “Mathematics Through Problem Solving” by Margaret Taplin, problem solving is expressed as being very important to know because it allows for people to understand the deeper meaning of mathematical ideas rather than just knowing easy strategies to solving problems. A big focus is on teachers showing students how to correctly understand problems and how problem solving can be used not only in teaching skills but also in society. A big contributor to problem solving strategies is…
Attitude In Mathematics
applied mathematics, with additional interest in differential equations. Lecturers are not much motivated to improve the situation rather they maintain their traditional lecture approach. Problem-solving applications and research activities generally are only beginning to take hold, however, because university mathematics has traditionally focused on theoretical topics on the assumption that the only career for math majors would be in teaching (The International Mathematics Union, 2014). In…
What Are The Most Directly Personal Outcomes Of Learning Maths
learning mathematics is the development of one’s mathematical confidence (Ernest 22). This includes being confident in one’s personal knowledge in mathematics, in applying previously learned mathematical knowledge in various situations and contexts, and acquisition of additional knowledge and skills when needed. Mathematical confidence translates to success in dealing with math problems and mathematics in general, thereby decreasing one’s negative attitudes towards mathematics and increasing the…
Large Class Size
being in small class is beneficial to all students, some research findings are inconclusive and even the result is reversed. In research, it is also found that with other variables controlled, class size was positively related to mathematics achievement in Belgium, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania and Netherlands, but not related in Slovak Republic, Czech Republic, Slovenia, and Turkey (Akyüz & Berberoğlu ,2010;Baker & Jones, 2005). The idea of class size is becoming a concern and an essential point…
The Three Main Branches Of Study: Operational Research, Statistics And Mathematics
There are three main branches of study under the umbrella of mathematics including, operational research, statistics and mathematics itself. Operational research (OR) is also known as management science and focuses on the analysis of decision-making processes - especially in large companies or the military. Well-known areas include the analysis of voting systems or game theory. Statistics is driven by real-world problems, mostly issues that can’t be broken down into simpler parts and…

Thinking Time Problem Essay
Introduction Mathematics is a necessary aspect of my life. In my home, work, school and even social environments, numbers surround me. Over many years, I have learned how to derive meaning from them or use them to help me figure things out. During this unit, I have learnt, re-learnt and applied various areas of mathematics to help me achieve the outcomes and find solutions to each ‘Thinking Time Problem’ [TTP] presented. These relate to the Australian Curriculum- Mathematics proficiency strands…
The Importance Of Teachings In Teaching Mathematics
Zan and Martino (2007) also argued that lecturer’s attitudes affect the effectiveness of the implementation of Problem solving approach in teaching mathematics. Nagasaki and Senuma (2002) for instance revealed that Japanese teachers perceived students’ ability to think creatively as an important element to succeed in Mathematics. However, they may have to change their perspectives on the thought that Mathematics is not really useful in terms of application in the real world, as it may influence…

Essay About Problem Solving Problems In Mathematics
Students Difficulties in Solving Word Problems in Mathematics Background of the Study Many students view mathematics as a very difficult subject since it does not only focusses on numbers but also in letters. Mathematics does not only require the students to come up with an answer but it also requires them to show the solutions on how they arrived at the answer. While in elementary, students were already taught on how to solve problems in a step-by-step procedure starting with what is asked in the problem , what are the given, make a number sentence or formulate an equation and solve the problem. These procedures are called problem-solving which cannot only apply in mathematics but also in other areas such as in Science, businesses and most …show more content…
In this essay, the author
- Explains that many students view mathematics as a difficult subject since it does not only focusses on numbers but also in letters. problem-solving is the basis of decision making.
- Explains that students often commit mistakes in solving problems, especially in word problems. translating words into a mathematical equation is one of the most common difficulties encountered by students.

Mathematics: Problem Solving and Ideal Math Classroom

We have different reasons why we hate or like math. As of these days, 70% of the students hate math and the remaining 30% is the one who likes math. Students say they hate math for some reasons, firstly simply because they don’t understand it and they just don’t like numbers. It’s like when they see numbers their life is starting to tear down. Secondly is they are afraid to take risk on answering the problem. They are thinking that it might not be the correct answer for the problem, that’s why they were lack in self confidence to answer the existing problems.
Thirdly, students hate math because of how the teachers discuss the topics and how the teachers give exams. When the discussion is going on, it is very easy for the students to understand the lessons but when it comes to examinations the teacher gives very different set of numbers that the students might not know how to solve it.

Proficient in: Classroom
“ KarrieWrites did such a phenomenal job on this assignment! He completed it prior to its deadline and was thorough and informative. ”
That’s why the students always got low grades when it comes to exams.
In addition with that students hate math because their teachers give them a lot of things to do, giving problem after problem, ditto sheets, text books, and senseless math problems. In behalf of those students who hate math, there are also those students who really like math and they have reasons for this. One is because; with math you can prove anything, there is an exact right and wrong and it’s wonderful to know that something is perfect other than partially right.

Math is challenging and requires a lot of thinking that’s why, there’s a certain satisfaction when you come across a difficult problem and are able to conquer it. It’s like the mysteries of the universe are being revealed to you because of your mental capacities. Second reason is, it does require memorization, but you’re not just memorizing facts and there is often another way to figure a problem out if you forget a formula or something.
You’re not just memorizing things, like i said, but instead more like plugging them in. like, for example, while it is helpful to memorize the multiplication tables, you don’t absolutely have to as long as you know how to multiply like in social studies or something like that, you have to remember specific facts. If you forget them, you’re basically screwed. But math isn’t really like that. And it always makes sense. There’s always a way to check your answer and make sure you did it right, not so in other subjects. Those students who like math say that: ‘If you had good basics and somebody taught you in the beginning then you never hate it.
Hating is just because you had poor basics and you don’t study math well in the beginning.’ Indeed, this message is really true. If you hate math or if you’re not excelling well on it, then you must do something about it. Not just say that you can’t make it, instead make a move for those problem, try and try until you can to say to yourselves that ‘at last, even though I’m slow at least I make it’. As says in one quote ‘mathematics may not teach us to breathe oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide or to love a friend and to forgive an enemy. But it gives us every reason to hope, that every problem, no matter how hard or complicated…solution exists!’
What is your ideal math classroom?
One of the factors that affect the students from learning math is the place that the discussion occurs. The classroom is a big impact on how the students will be learning from the teacher. I as a student have also an ideal math classroom. If I am the one who will design or choose for it, I want a classroom that is look like a laboratory lab which has a tool inside that is invented by the mathematicians. All the things that you were going to see and use is high tech. for example the door, before you enter you must solve a problem or a set of numbers or else you can’t attend or enter the class. As I’ve said all things are high tech, including the chairs that has a special touch screen calculator on its desk.
The table of the teacher that is also touch screen and has a program inside of it or where our list of names including the results of quizzes and exams are place. But it is safe because only the teacher and some higher positions are the one who knows the password. I want a classroom that will give me energy or will inspire me to be attentive and always prepare in class. A classroom that is something new. Not the one that gives me stress and lack of interest in studying. It must be a classroom that has a good energy and happiness, not just serious lessons and hard discussions.
What character trait you like in a math teacher?
The behaviour or the characteristics of the teacher is one of the factors that must be considered why some students dislike math. The trait of the teacher that is being strict is we know that will really help the students to change. But it will give a stress and pressure to students and that is one of the causes why students begin to dislike math. As a student I want a teacher that is not so much strict and giving considerations to his students. A teacher that is not giving loads of things to do and must know how to understand the reasons of his students.
Another one is he/she must know how to accept his wrong doings when it comes to checking our papers. A teacher who has a good heart that he/she will think the capacity that our brain can solve and answer correctly. A teacher that is not giving a very heavy problem that even one in our room doesn’t get it correctly. Moreover, a teacher that can be able to explain the topics clearly and he/she must be approachable in any time.

What Is Math Essay?
Along with math problems, students face other challenges in this field, widely known as math essays.
Math essay is a typical assignment given at college and universities. It comes in two general types.
The first one involves doing actual math and requires students to communicate their math ideas, solutions, and concepts in a comprehensive and easily digestive manner. As a rule, it is used in tandem with experiments, research, or studies.
The second one requires students to write an essay about math and its application. It does not differ from other traditional writing assignments given by teachers in different fields of study. It implies students reflect on the subject or specific topic and display arguments and opinions. Usually, instructors provide students with math essay topics to choose from. For instance, some of the popular topics are:
- History of Euclidean geometry.
- Pierre de Fermat and his contribution to the field.
- Analysis of Golden Ratio and its implementation in the Art.
- Real-life applications of Math.
- The core problems of K-theory.
- Investigation of the properties of game theory.
- Explanation of the way of solving Sudoku.
On top of that, you may choose a topic on your own. In this case, consider ideas discussed during class and focus on those that were not explained in detail or had some interesting applications in real life. If you still doubt, use the math paper example from our library as a source of inspiration.
How to Write Math Essay?
To write an excellent math essay, it is crucial to understand the structure of each type and follow its specific set of rules. Let’s consider each one closely.
Essay about Math
If you need to write an essay about math, you need to follow standard rules for writing assignments. At a minimum, this means
- Do your research to secure the best topic.
- Gather as much information as possible.
- Break content into three main parts.
- Apply APA or MLA style or any other college style specified by the instructor to cite resources.
- Use 12pt black traditional typeface.
- Add margins.
- Use double space.
- Check and double-check grammar and punctuation.
- Ensure plagiarism-free content.
To nail a math essay that communicates an experiment or math problem, ensure it meets such criteria:
- It shows the connection between the work and the essay.
- It leads readers through the logical structure of math solution.
- background (it gives the history of the idea, concept, or problem),
- introduction (it uncovers your specific work and special definitions and symbols),
- body (it describes the work),
- implications (it sums up everything and gives readers an idea of the consequences of your work).
- It features formulas when it is necessary. While some teachers allow students to write down formulas by hand, as practice shows in universities, you need to use Tex or LaTex to introduce equations. On top of that, formulas should have separate lines and indents. Otherwise, they are part of the reading flow and follow the same grammar and punctuation rules. A mathematical statement should be treated as a sentence that ends with a period, whereas incomplete mathematical statements should be treated as nouns.
Maths on their own can give students a hard time. However, this should not be the case with our platform at hand. If you do not have inspiration or you do not know where to start or how to format the paper, or you do not know how to solve the problem, you can always get hints from math essay example that can be found in our collection. It will save lots of precious time, ease your pain and give you a boost in your endeavors, turning this notoriously tricky field of study into child’s play.

It is not about you being less skillful. You are like all the students who get an A grade in Math. It is about building your own skill and working on them.
- Long Term Memory
However, choosing the correct equation and remembering the perfect methodology is important if you are looking to get ahead with your math paper. Again, the only way you will be able to memorize all these methods is if you practice and solve the math problems.

Long-term memory is the key to success and ace at a mathematical problem.
So, the fact that you can't memorize formulas doesn't mean that you don't possess math skills.
To solve this problem, consider the following techniques:
- Make yourself familiar with the formulas beforehand by practicing.

Paper Due? Why Suffer? That's our Job!
- Take Your Time Before Launch
Solving a question you practiced at home sounds amazing.
Hold on! There is no need to rush.
Math has a deceiving nature. The overconfidence to solve an equation may trap you.
It is essential to read the question carefully or at least twice.
The rush to solve may cause you to lose grades and, in extreme cases, get you a big zero.
Lucky for you, the issue is solvable.
You must be familiar with the concept of word problems from your Math class.
Keep that lecture in mind before starting the solution.
Yes, take your time to read math word problem; the answer is hidden in the question itself; all you need to do is pay attention and read it carefully and not jump straight to solving it.
- Understand Concepts

It is important to know the concept and logic behind math problems. Improving math skills mean a better understanding of the logic behind these concepts.

In fact, a fun maths study group can actually help enhance your skills.
- Visualize the Problem
The most productive technique is visualizing the mathematical problem. Often, we have difficulty understanding math problems altogether; if we break it down with the aid of drawings or pictures, the problem becomes solvable.
Now you must be thinking that not everyone is an artist to draw spectacular visuals.
Well, you don’t need to be one, a simple picture or drawing that is enough to serve the purpose.
- Handwriting Should be Legible
A single mistake of the minus sign can be your nightmare in math.
If handwriting is clear and neat, such careless mistakes of signs or symbols should not happen.
Teachers do not bother to understand what students intend to write; for them, what is written is what the student really means.
Unfortunately, they rarely give an edge to the students in these situations.
- Practice, Practice and Practice
This is one of the most important tips on how to be better at maths.
Math is hard, and not everyone likes to do hard things. Right? But practice is the key if you want to learn a new skill. The same goes for Maths as well.
Practice makes a mathematician perfect. Whatever the level of math problem is, if you practice enough, then you can nail it.
This strategy is followed by toppers. Yes, do not take it as an exaggerated statement.
Effective practice will allow you to have the correct methodology at your fingertips.
When you practice repeatedly, other skills also establish.
For example, your friends will ask you to teach them. It will further boost your confidence to solve mathematical questions.
Also, go the extra mile and practice additional problems. Start with the simpler ones and as you get comfortable with them, move to the more complicated ones.

If you would just skip your mistake without having a detailed look at it. Chances are you will have to do it all over again.

This is how to get better at math.
Have you understood the secret?

How to Write a Problem Solution Paper
Last Updated: December 20, 2022 References

A problem solution paper focuses on a particular problem or set of problems. As the essay writer, you will then need to come up with a solution or several solutions to the stated problem. Problem solution papers are common on exams, as they allow you to explore an issue and use critical thinking to respond with a solution. To write a problem solution paper, start by outlining the paper. Then, follow the structure of a problem solution paper and polish the paper so it is at its best when you turn it in.
Starting the Paper

- For example, you may have a main situation like, “obesity and poor fitness,” or “trigger warnings on college campuses.”
- If you get to choose the situation, make a list of groups you belong to, such as “school,” “family,” “race,” “culture”,” or “local community.” Then, identify a situation or issue you have encountered as a member of one of these groups.

- In the situation component, you will paraphrase the prompt of the paper in your own words.
- In the problem component, you will state the problem or problems and explain what they are in your own words.
- In the solution component, you will state your solution or solutions to the problem. You will also explain how it will address the problem.
- In the evaluation component, you will list the main ideas in the paper and offer a prediction or recommendation based on your solution to the problem.
- There will only be one situation presented to you in the prompt for the paper. You can then have multiple problems and multiple solutions that link back to the situation.

- Introduction section, where you discuss the situation
- Transition sentence or paragraph
- Conclusion section, where you discuss the evaluation

- Problem 1 and Solution to Problem 1
- Problem 2 and Solution to Problem 2
- Problem 3 and Solution to Problem 3
Writing the Paper

- For example, if the situation in the paper prompt is “obesity and poor fitness,” you may focus on specific aspects of the situation in the introduction. You may look at how the consumption of unhealthy food and the overuse of cars plays into obesity and poor fitness in society.

- If you cannot find a lot of outside material on the problem, you can collect your own data for the paper. Do this by making a survey that you give to people who are affected by the problem. You can also interview people associated with the problem, or with possible solutions.
- For example, if you were researching the problem “trigger warnings on college campuses,” you may interview college representatives at your university or college. You may also talk to students on campus.
- Most problem solution papers written for exams do not require you to cite any outside sources. You may need to cite your sources if you are writing the problem solution paper for a class.

- For example, if you were writing about the situation “obesity and poor fitness,” you may have the following thesis statement: “Obesity and poor fitness can lead to a decrease in life expectancy, and it is essential that individuals and governments work together to tackle this issue by improving their citizen's diet and fitness.”

- For example, you may come up with a solution that addresses a lack of resources by adding support, money, or more staff. Or you may come up with a solution that addresses the problem by changing an existing practice or habit.

- For example, if one of your solutions to the problem of obesity and poor fitness is to encourage people to cook at home, you may list a few specific ways people can do this. You may suggest that national eating healthy at home campaign is created, offering recipes online that take less than 30 minutes to prepare at home.

- For example, you may end up a call to action like, “With rising levels of obesity in our country, it is essential that we take action now to address this serious issue.”
Polishing the Paper

- You can create a reverse outline using your paper as a guide, where you go through each section and confirm it follows the outline you started with.

- You can also show the paper to a peer, friend, or family member and get them to proofread it for you.

- If you are writing the problem solution paper for a class assignment, you may still have a set word count. Check that your paper falls within this word count.

About This Article

A problem solution paper focuses on a particular issue and should include one or more solutions to it. You’ll need to begin the paper by stating the situation in your own words. For example, the situation could be “obesity and core fitness.” Include a thesis statement at the end of your introduction, which could be something like, “Obesity can lead to decreased life expectancy, making it imperative for governments and people to tackle this issue by improving diet and fitness.” The following sections should deal with identifying all of the problems arising from the situation and proposing solutions to them. Try to give examples to explain each solution. For instance, if you say the growth of obesity can be stopped by improving people’s diets, you could propose a national healthy eating campaign. Finally, you should conclude by evaluating the whole paper and making recommendations about how to implement your solutions. Essays About Math: Top 10 Examples and Writing Prompts
Love it or hate it, an understanding of math is said to be crucial to success. So, if you are writing essays about math, read our top essay examples.
Mathematics is the study of numbers, shapes, and space using reason and usually a special system of symbols and rules for organizing them . It can be used for a variety of purposes, from calculating a business’s profit to estimating the mass of a black hole. However, it can be considered “controversial” to an extent.
Most students adore math or regard it as their least favorite. No other core subject has the same infamy as math for generating passionate reactions both for and against it. It has applications in every field, whether basic operations or complex calculus problems. Knowing the basics of math is necessary to do any work properly.
If you are writing essays about Math, we have compiled some essay examples for you to get started.
1. Mathematics: Problem Solving and Ideal Math Classroom by Darlene Gregory
“The trait of the teacher that is being strict is we know that will really help the students to change. But it will give a stress and pressure to students and that is one of the causes why students begin to dislike math. As a student I want a teacher that is not so much strict and giving considerations to his students. A teacher that is not giving loads of things to do and must know how to understand the reasons of his students.”
Gregory discusses the reasons for most students’ hatred of math and how teachers handle the subject in class. She says that math teachers do not explain the topics well, give too much work, and demand nothing less than perfection. To her, the ideal math class would involve teachers being more considerate and giving less work.

2. Math Essay by Prasanna
“Math is complicated to learn, and one needs to focus and concentrate more. Math is logical sometimes, and the logic needs to be derived out. Maths make our life easier and more straightforward. Math is considered to be challenging because it consists of many formulas that have to be learned, and many symbols and each symbol generally has its significance.”
In her essay, Prasanna gives readers a basic idea of what math is and its importance. She additionally lists down some of the many uses of mathematics in different career paths, namely managing finances, cooking, home modeling and construction, and traveling. Math may seem “useless” and “annoying” to many, but the essay gives readers a clear message: we need math to succeed.
3. Short essay on the importance of Mathematics by Jay Prakash
“In this modern age of Science and Technology, emphasis is given on Science such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine and Engineering. Mathematics, which is a Science by any criterion, also is an efficient and necessary tool being employed by all these Sciences. As a matter of fact, all these Sciences progress only with the aid of Mathematics. So it is aptly remarked, ‘Mathematics is a Science of all Sciences and art of all arts.’”
As its title suggests, Prakash’s essay briefly explains why math is vital to human nature. As the world continues to advance and modernize, society emphasizes sciences such as medicine, chemistry, and physics. All sciences employ math; it cannot be studied without math. It also helps us better our reasoning skills and maximizes the human mind. It is not only necessary but beneficial to our everyday lives.
4. Math Anxiety by Elias Wong
“Math anxiety affects different not only students but also people in different ways. It’s important to be familiar with the thoughts you have about yourself and the situation when you encounter math. If you are aware of unrealistic or irrational thoughts you can work to replace those thoughts with more positive and realistic ones.”
Wong writes about the phenomenon known as “math anxiety.” This term is used to describe many people’s hatred or fear of math- they feel that they are incapable of doing it. This anxiety is caused mainly by students’ negative experiences in math class, which makes them believe they cannot do well. Wong explains that some people have brains geared towards math and others do not, but this should not stop people from trying to overcome their math anxiety. Through review and practice of basic mathematical skills, students can overcome them and even excel at math.
5. Why Math Isn’t as Useless as We Think by Murtaza Ali
“We see that math is not an obscure subject reserved for some pretentious intellectual nobility. Though we may not be aware of it, mathematics is embedded into many different aspects of our lives and our world — and by understanding it deeply, we may just gain a greater understanding of ourselves.”
Similar to some of the previous essays, Ali’s essay explains the importance of math. Interestingly, he tells a story of the life of a person name Kyle. He goes through the typical stages of life and enjoys typical human hobbies, including Rubik’s cube solving. Throughout this “Kyle’s” entire life, he performed the role of a mathematician in various ways. Ali explains that math is much more prevalent in our lives than we think, and by understanding it, we can better understand ourselves.
