What to expect flying Air Canada economy class

Air canada economy vs. premium economy, ways to get good value on air canada, air canada's economy class, recapped.

Air Canada's Aeroplan , its frequent flyer program, updated its award charts in September 2022. The resulting changes are a mixed bag. Some North American routes might increase in cost up to 10%, but economy awards aren't going up. Plus, short-haul award flights between North America and South America are decreasing by up to 33% because of a new distance band.

If you’re looking to book economy flights on Air Canada, here’s what you need to know to make the most of your booking.

Air Canada introduced basic economy back in 2018, but unlike other airlines, the difference between basic and standard economy amenities isn’t very drastic. Air Canada charges for checked bags and advanced seat selection in both bundles.

Other, more expensive options include Flex, Comfort and Latitude, which offer free bags, better amenities and discounts.

Air Canada Economy class travel experience

Award bookings

Booking an Air Canada economy class award ticket puts you into standard economy, although you have an option to pay more points for booking into Flex, Comfort or Latitude.

air canada seat selection tool

Air Canada seats in economy are inconsistent across the fleet. Seat sizes and pitch (distance between the seats) vary, not only between narrow-body aircraft (A320 and B337) and wide-body (A330 and B787), but also within the same group of aircraft.

While you’re more likely to enjoy more comfortable seats on wide-body jets, a few Air Canada Rouge narrow-body A320 aircraft have spectacular 34-inch pitch, versus the 31-inch on A330. On the other end of the spectrum, there are seats with a dreadful 29-inch pitch.

As to the onboard service, Air Canada has received a number of accolades from airline rating company Skytrax , including Best Airline in North America (eight times in 10 years), Best Airline Staff in Canada and Best Airline Cabin Cleanliness in North America.

Other features of Air Canada’s economy class

Other features for both basic and standard economy include:

Bag allowance: Carry-on only.

Boarding: No priority boarding.

Food: Available for purchase (free with a Latitude ticket).

Paying to upgrade from economy class to Air Canada premium economy might be an interesting proposition for longer flights. So, what is the difference between Air Canada economy versus premium economy?

In short, premium economy passengers receive perks in the airport and on the plane. They receive expedited check-in and priority baggage services, early boarding and larger, more comfortable seats — which also have more legroom. Premium economy passengers board in Zone 2 of 6, whereas economy flyers typically board in Zones 4, 5 or 6.

The general Air Canada economy class experience varies by destination.

International economy flyers get complimentary wines, spirits and meals and a personal touch screen entertainment center. A pillow and blanket are also offered for free.

North America and Caribbean economy flyers, meanwhile, only get a personal touch screen entertainment center. No snacks or sleeping comforts are provided for free.

Book with points on short hauls, especially when cash fares are high

Use Air Canada points on short but often expensive routes up to 500 miles. Unlike some airlines using fully dynamic pricing, Air Canada still has caps on maximum pricing, so paying 6,000 to 10,000 points for a flight that could otherwise cost hundreds of dollars is a good deal.

Here are some example flight routes in the 500-mile band:

Seattle or Portland, Oregon, to Vancouver.

New York to Toronto, Ottawa or Montreal.

Also keep in mind that some short, domestic Air Canada flights can be expensive; consider using your Aeroplan points when you’re traveling within Canada, too.

Book your Air Canada flight with United miles

If you have United MileagePlus miles, booking an Air Canada economy flight with United miles (United and Air Canada are Star Alliance partners), may cost you less than booking directly on Air Canada.

For a November flight between Miami and Vancouver, it would cost only 14,000 United miles as compared to the 17,500-25,000 required for the 2,800+ mile flight using Air Canada’s Aeroplan points.

» Learn more: Great ways to earn United MileagePlus Miles

It’s not always this way, so make sure you check the rates for your desired flight on both the Air Canada and United website.

book air canada with united miles

Pack only a carry-on, and bring your own snacks

Checking a bag will cost you around $24 ($30 CAD) unless you book a more expensive Flex, Comfort or Latitude ticket. If you can do with just a carry-on, that’ll save you nearly $50 ($60 CAD) per round trip.

The Air Canada Bistro meal box costs over $8 ($10.49 CAD). Taking your snack on board can not only save you more than $16 ($21 CAD) per round trip, but can also give you control of what you want to eat.

» Learn more: Checked baggage vs. carry-on: What you need to know

Air Canada economy seats may not be consistent across the fleet, but that also means you can be in for a nice surprise, since some aircraft offer very generous legroom. Plus, you can expect solid service from Air Canada, which Skytrax named Best Airline in North America.

Unfortunately, the new award chart has made the cost of your award ticket generally more expensive; however, you can still get good value by redeeming your points on short flights or booking Air Canada flights with United miles. You can also save some money by not checking a bag and by packing your own food.

If you don’t receive a confirmation e-mail, call us toll-free at 1 866 529-2079 for assistance.

With our Shopping Cart, you can buy multiple products for multiple travellers all under the same booking. While making a booking, the "Travellers" screen requires that you provide all information for travellers and then assign each to the products and services you have booked.

Traveller information includes the names of all people who are travelling. The type of traveller (adult, child, senior, etc.) must be specified.

The site is designed to provide enough spaces for you to enter the names of all the travellers. By default the system provides the same number of spaces as people on your booking. If you need more travellers, click on "Add a traveller" and provide the information.

If you haven't completed the booking, you can simply go back to the traveller info box and change the name. If you have completed the booking, please contact us at 1 866 529-2079.

Assigning a traveller means choosing who will be using the products or services you have booked. For example, who will be taking the flight, who will be staying at the hotel, or who will partake in the activity.

The names of the travellers (as you entered them under “Traveller info”) will appear in the dropdown menus under each product or service you have selected. Simply choose the names of the appropriate people. Be sure to make note of the type of traveller (i.e., adult, child, senior, etc.) per person.

From the "Travellers" screen, you cannot change the number of people booked on each product or service. To change the number of people using a product or service you must return to your Shopping Cart (icon in the top right corner of the screen). Once in your Shopping Cart you’ll be able to modify the number of people.

Please note : To change the number of people, you may have to remove an item from your Cart and then re-add it.

All travellers should visit Air Canada’s Travel Requirements page for more information on entry requirements for different destinations.

It is your sole responsibility to ensure that you and any child travelling with you have all the travel documents necessary to enter in, and/or transit through, each country on your itinerary. Please ensure you verify the requirements for each country as the required documents for the outbound portion of your travel may differ from those required on the return .

Upon receipt of full payment and all applicable fees, electronic tickets will be issued by email between 30 and 14 days prior to departure to the e-mail address provided at the time of booking. A Word of Caution When Booking Air Canada with United Miles

Mark Ostermann

Highest Ever! - IHG Rewards Premier 175K Offer

I recently had a quick trip to St. John’s Newfoundland, trip report upcoming since the place is beautiful, but I ran into a speed bump that I wanted to let you know about.  If you remember I booked my flight to St. John’s using United miles because Lifemiles were being all Lifemiles like .  After several frustrating hours I finally caved and transferred Ultimate Rewards to United to book the flight for 25K.  I was pretty happy with myself since it was a $700+ ticket.  But I have to share a word of caution when booking Air Canada with United miles with you.  You need to call in for seat assignments…and it is something you will want to do. I made the mistake of not calling in and it almost cost me a seat on the plane ride home.

My Laziness Almost Got the Best of Me

This was my first time on Air Canada and to be honest I am not a huge fan.  The planes were old and the service was in-between a low cost carrier and a full service carrier.  You get drinks, without ice, and there were no snacks for all but 1 of 4 flights etc.

After booking the flight I tried to go onto Air Canada’s website to select seats etc. but it wouldn’t work with United’s reference code.  After doing some googling I found out that you need to call Air Canada to get their internal reference code.  I put it off since I hate having to call in and then I just kind of said whatever and said they can pick my seat for me.

If you do call in and want to select a seat Air Canada will charge between $10-$40 to do so.  However, seat selection is free at 24 hours out and this is the key part.

air canada seat selection tool

My Experience

On my flights out I looked pretty smart.  I was placed in 2nd row on the 45 minute flight to Toronto and then an exit row seat for the longer flight to St. John’s.  On the way back is where I almost got myself into trouble.

When I printed my ticket at the airport I had no seat assignment.  The gate agent told me the flight was oversold and they may have to rebook me.  She said I should have checked in online at 24 hours out to reduce my chances of getting bumped.  Their bump schedule is whoever checks in last are the first to get bumped. Although my friend checked in a few seconds after me and got a seat assignment so who knows what is really going on.

After getting through security I want to my gate and tried to get some more info.  The gate agent said that they were oversold by 4 seats and I wouldn’t know until the plane starting boarding if I would have a spot.  It would depend on if people didn’t show up or changed their flights etc.

Canada’s Denied Boarding Laws

After sitting down I looked up Canada’s denied boarding laws.  They had recently put new rules and regulations into place to more mirror EU 261 . I was feeling less annoyed at this point because at least there were set standards of compensation in place.  Something that I wish the US would take a more serious look at.  The compensation set up is as follows ( source CBC ):

Overbooking delays of less than six hours will require a minimum $900 payment, delays between six and nine hours mean a minimum $1,800 payment and delays longer than nine hours will see passengers compensated a minimum of $2,400.

How to Avoid this Going Forward

Sarah a member of our Facebook Group gave a good tip how to get around this issue:

When you book on United you can click View my Receipt and there you will see your partner confirmation number as well as your ticket number. Write both of those down. Then go to the partner’s website and enter in that info to book your seat there.

Thanks for the great tip Sarah!

I really wish all of this was more standardized among airlines. I’d hate to know how many hours of my life I’ve wasted trying to figure out how to select a seat on a random airline partner, or figuring out my bag allotment on all of the different Star Alliance carriers. As a rule, I never buy the different versions of “basic economy”, but sometimes it’s impossible to tell which class you are actually booking. Ugh!

It would be nice if something was standardized and easier for the consumer but they don’t care about us 🙂

You can also have your seat assigned for free by sending a DM on twitter to Air Canada. They are quick to respond and I have had no issues. I have used this method several times.

Great tip Cambio – even before 24 hours before?

Ick. I’ve considered AC for some flights for work overseas but now I’ll reconsider. They sound awful especially for a longer haul.

From what I have heard their long haul product is a lot better but I was not impressed with their domestic planes or service.

The AC booking reference is also available on United’s booking page – just look up your reservation on united.com, and the AC booking reference is in the “Other Information” section.

Also, you were speaking with the gate agent (no wings on the uniform), not the flight attendant (wings on the uniform).

Good catch – updated thanks
