Changes Are Coming to Your Credit Score

FICO’s newest model takes a long-term look at how you’ve managed credit.

FICO, the credit-scoring giant, is adjusting how it calculates its three-digit key to your creditworthiness . Consumers who have rising levels of credit card and other debt could see their FICO scores take a hit. But if you already have an above-average score, it may get even healthier.

6 Ways to Boost Your Credit Score -- Fast

With its new FICO 10 T score, FICO incorporates “trended data,” reviewing a consumer’s account balances and payment activity on loans and credit cards over the past 24 months. If you steadily pay off debt over time, that has a positive effect on your 10 T score.

Paying the full balance on your credit card each month is also good for your score, says Ted Rossman, of CreditCards.com (opens in new tab) . Or, if you pay only the minimum amount due for a while and later bump up your monthly payments, that also helps your score, he says.

Plus, certain short-term changes in account activity may not hurt your score as much as they would have in the past. Say that you typically use a small percentage of the credit available to you on a credit card (a low credit-utilization ratio improves your credit score) and pay off the full balance monthly. But then you book a vacation with your card, racking up a big balance and carrying some of it to the following month. The 10 T score views that event as an anomaly, and it may not harm your score as much as it would under previous models. The use of trended data “creates a smoothing effect” over such blips, says Joanne Gaskin, vice president of scores and analytics at FICO.

On the flip side, paying off a big chunk of credit card debt to decrease your credit-utilization ratio—especially if you take out a personal loan to do it—won’t likely give your score as quick of a boost as under previous models. And recent late payments may be more heavily penalized.

FICO says that credit card and auto lenders that require a minimum score of 680 (on a scale of 300 to 850) may approve about 6% more applicants under 10 T compared with FICO 8, a model that lenders commonly use now.

How to Build a Credit History

Lenders are usually slow to take on new scores, so it could be years until FICO 10 T is broadly adopted. And the fundamental advice to maintain a strong credit score hasn’t changed: Pay your bills on time, keep your credit-utilization ratio low and apply for new credit sparingly.

How FICO scores have evolved

Every five years or so, FICO updates its credit-score formula. Each version builds on the previous one. Here are the new features that FICO added to each of its three latest score models.

➜ Released in 2009 and commonly used by lenders today.

➜ Using a high percentage of available credit on a credit card is more heavily penalized.

➜ A single late payment isn’t as detrimental to your score, but numerous delinquencies are more harmful.

➜ Collection accounts with original balances of less than $100 are ignored.

➜ Becoming an authorized user on a stranger’s credit card through “trade-line renting” has little benefit.

➜ Released in 2014 and gaining wider adoption by lenders.

➜ Paid-off collection accounts are ignored.

➜ Unpaid collection accounts related to medical debt have less of a negative impact.

➜ Rental-payment history is considered when included on a credit report.

➜ To be released mid to late 2020.

➜ Incorporates “trended data,” analyzing the past 24 months of balances and payment activity on credit cards and loans.

➜ Recent late payments may be penalized more harshly.

Editing a GHIN Posted Score

What if I make a mistake when posting my score? Can I edit my own score?

Once you have posted your score, the GHIN software does not let you change your score. If you need a change to your posted score, the handicap committee or the professional staff at your home club will edit the score for you. Please do not call the Carolinas Golf Association for a score change. We are unable to do this for you. This is strictly a club responsibility per the Rules of Handicapping.

Members of the Carolinas eClubs and our Carolinas Youth on Course clubs can request changes to their score (if needed) from the Carolinas Golf Association as we function as members of the handicap committees for these clubs.

GHIN Frequently Asked Questions

If you have questions about the World Handicap System and Rules of Handicapping, please  click here .

Q: What if I do not provide an email address, how can I post a score?

A: If you do not provide an email address, you will not be able to create a digital profile and log into the GHIN Mobile App or ghin.com. You will be able to access a Club Kiosk or have your Club Admin post a score on your behalf.

Score Posting Questions

Q: I made an error when posting my score, how do I correct it?

A: Please contact your Club or  Golf Association , they will be able to assist you in making a correction.

Q: When posting my score, the Par and/or Course/Slope Ratings do not match the scorecard. Why?

A: The local association is responsible for issuing Course/Slope Ratings, Par and measured lengths that appear for score posting purposes. If there is a discrepancy, the course will need to work with their local association to rectify the issue.

Q: I am getting an error message when trying to post a hole-by-hole score, why?

A: We do not have the Par or Stroke Index data available in our database for that course/tee.  Please post a total score and contact your Club or  Golf Association .

Q: Can I edit Stats or add Stats to my score?

A: You can edit Stats as well as add Stats to a hole-by-hole score posted within the “Stats” section of  www.ghin.com  or the GHIN Mobile App.

Games/Score Keeping Questions

Q: What is included in the Games/Score Keeping feature?

A: The main highlights of this feature include the ability to set up and track a match (using Net or Gross Score) as well as keep and digitally transfer scores to other GHIN golfers in your group.

Q: How many golfers can you keep score for or add to a match?

A: You can keep score and setup a match for golfers within your group.  So the user can add up to 3 additional golfers.

Q: How are strokes determined when playing a Match using Net Score?

A: Strokes are determined and based off the golfer with the lowest Playing Handicap.

Q: What is meant by transferring scores?

A: If the user is keeping score for other GHIN golfers, whether or not they are playing a match, the user will be prompted to transfer the scores to the other GHIN golfers when they post their score.  Transferred scores will appear in the other golfers’ GHIN Mobile App and can be reviewed, edited and posted by the golfers.

Q: How will golfers know they have a transferred score? How do they post them?

A: If the score keeper transfers scores to other GHIN golfers, those golfers will receive a push notification (as long as they have them enabled).  Additionally, there will be a “Saved Rounds” menu item as well as a prompt about a saved round when the user clicks on the “Post Score” home screen button within the GHIN Mobile App. Golfers can then review, edit and post their score within the GHIN Mobile App.

Q: What if golfers do not have a digital profile or do not belong to a GHIN Association?

A: Those golfers can be added to a match or have their score kept, but unfortunately, transferred scores will only appear within the GHIN Mobile App. So if golfers were manually added or do not have access to the GHIN Mobile App, their scores will not be transferred.

The score keeper can take a screen shot of their scorecard and message or email the image to other golfers.

A: After entering scores, you will be prompted to go back to your phone to review and post your score.

What To Do If You Entered The Wrong Score or Information Into GHIN?

Like a good golfer you finish your round and immediately pull out your phone to enter your score into the GHIN system.  After hitting “Post Score” you realize itt wasn’t the blue tees, it was the whites.  Oh crap!  It wasn’t April 1st it was actually the 2nd.  What was I thinking?

Being on it, you go back to the “Post a Score” page but there is nowhere to edit scores.  Help!!

As a part of our club responsibilities we are here to edit any of your past scores for you.

I meant to post a score of 75 at Rio Hondo GC, Downey, California on 7/10/18! I played from the white tees!

Thank you very much!!!

Please delete my 8-29-18 entry. The information was not correct. It should read — 8-29-18 Glen Annie golf club , Santa Bárbara , men’s combo green/white, score , 98 .Thank-you.

How do you change courses played to line up with the right tees on GHIN if it doesn’t show it in recent or favorite?

Why is my Handicap Index not changing?

You may have posted a few scores recently and expected your index to move up or down. if it hasn't, there may be an easy answer why..

The magic of the USGA's World Handicap system may also be the reason that every time you post a score, your index doesn't necessarily change. This is because The system doesn't use every score when calculating your handicap index. The calculation takes into account your 20 most recent scores, and of those 20, the best 8 scores (lowest differentials ) are used to determine your Index.

This means, that your best 8 scores of the 20 might have been a pretty long time ago, depending on how frequently you play. If that's the case, then any new scores posted will probably affect your Index. This works in the inverse as well. If you post 8 really good scores in a row and then shoot a handful of bad scores, your index won't move up because it's still being calculated from those 8 best scores out of 20.

If you are curious about which scores in your most recent 20 are being used to calculate your index, take a look at your scores in the GHIN app or on ghin.com . Also a reminder that your Handicap Index updates every night around midnight.

For more in depth knowledge of handicapping, feel free to read through the USGA Handicap Manual

Daily Revisions

Under the Rules of Handicapping, a Handicap Index will update the day after a score(s) is posted. All golfers must check for an updated index prior to their round and be aware of course handicap changes. It will be extremely important that scores are submitted immediately after a round so that all handicaps are accurate.

Nine Hole Golfers

A 9-hole golfer today in the GHIN database will be converted to an 18 Handicap Index profile. An 18-hole Handicap Index will be calculated if the golfer has at least six 9-hole scores posted.

To ensure that a player has only one Handicap Index, and to easily identify the golf club or golf association with authority should issues arise, a player should have one Home Club.

Unique Golfer Profiles

All golfers will have the ability to use new enhanced statistics though the web and mobile app. If provided, all golfers must use a unique email address. (Husband and wife may not share the same address). (April launch))

Club Administrators All clubs will have a single administrator upon launch. Each club will then be able to self manage and add additional administrators after launch.

Service Removal When migrating existing club data into the new platform all services will be removed. Existing services will roll up under a single unique club. Clubs will be able to use the new Groups feature to segment the membership roster.

Software Program New Score Entry Program and club Admin Portal for managing member handicaps.
