Hi, I followed the instructions for “How to Set a Custom Text message Ringtone for a specific contact” – remarkably like I’d tried to do myself before butwithout success . And it yielded the same result – I can successfully set the ringtone for a specific contact BUT it then seems to applied to others for whom I’ve set a specific ringtone. I change one of the others and similarly it seems to be the same on all custom settings. Perhaps it’s the phone? Xiaomi Rednote 10 google Message ver 22020524_00_RC02.phone_dynamic. Any ideas? How To Set a Text Message Ringtone on Android

This tutorial will show you how to do that and how to set a unique tone for individual people so you know ahead of time who is messaging you. I’ll also show you how to create your very own ringtones for the ultimate customization.

Set a text message ringtone on Android

To set the same tone for all messages on an Android phone, you just need to select a built in sound from the phone. Different phones have different built in sounds while others phones will just have one or two.

You can also turn vibration on or off from here should you wish to.

Set a unique tone for a contact in Android

One very useful feature is the ability to assign a different tone for different contacts in Android. This lets you know without even looking who is trying to message you. It’s very useful if you don’t necessarily want to be interrupted from something and would like a hint as to who is contacting you.

You can repeat this for every contact you message if you have enough tones to assign to them. Your main challenge now is remembering who is who!

Set a unique ringtone for your Android contacts

As well as setting unique message tones, you can also set unique ringtones for your contacts. This offers the same advantage as those for messages. If you’re busy, you can know immediately who is calling and decide whether to answer right away or not.

Again, you can set as many of these as you have ringtones for.

How to create custom ringtones for an Android phone

Depending on the make and model of your phone, you may have dozens of ringtones or just a couple. You may quickly become bored of them or you may not. Either way, with newer Android phones, it is super easy to create a truly custom ringtone. You can buy them or download them if you prefer but nothing beats the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

As Android can use MP3s for ringtones, we will make our own and import it onto the phone. I use Audacity to create my tones. It is free and very powerful and works on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Your new ringtone should now sound every time you receive a call. If you have set a custom ringtone for contacts as above, this ringtone will sound for everyone other than those contacts.

Creating a start point for the ringtone will take some practice. Some audio tracks or clips may begin slow or quiet which is no good for a ringtone. You may need to cut a lot of intro until you have audio that begins loud enough for you to pick it up right away. You don’t want the other person to have heard several rings before you hear the ringtone do you!

If you wish to change or disable the text message ringtone on your Android device, you can do so with these steps.

Set Ringtone for All Text Messages

Note: Some Android devices may have different apps included by the carrier for text messaging. These instructions are for the default Android Messaging app.

From the Home screen, tap the app slider, then open the “ Messaging “ app.

Set Ringtone for Specific Contact

My Android doesn’t have these options. What can I do?

If you want to have more features, like the ability to set a sound to a specific contact, you will need to seek an app in the Google Play app store. I recommend Handcent . It’s loaded with tons of features and is easier to use than the default text messaging app. If you don’t like Handcent, another great app called ChompSMS allows the same functionality.

I want to set me own custom ringtones. How do I do that?

Use an app like Audacity to edit the custom sound and save it in a supported format like MP3 or WAV. You can then copy the sound file over to your device. Usually, there is a directory called “Ringtones” somewhere on the phone you can move the file to.

Most newer devices have an option to “Add Ringtone” at the bottom of the ringtone selections where you can browse to the location of the sound file.

i have a samsung A10e currently using Android vers. 11. i also do not have the “sound” option, but i seem to have found where this can be changed (at least on my phone). here are the steps that i have done:

1. go to Settings/Apps/and go to your message program (mine is the default = “Messages” that comes with this phone)

2. go to “NOTIFICATIONS” 3. go to “NEW MESSAGES” in here, you can make these changes (as well as others): a. turn the sound on/off b. “show as a pop-up” c. change the “Sound” here is what most of you are asking for. click on this option, and choose the new sound that you want. on my phone, there is a selection of default sounds. at this point, i do not know how to insert you own custom or downloaded sounds, but i’m sure that this can be done. d. in this screen, there are other settings that you can explore with.

note, if you have a different brand of phone or a different version of Android, these steps may be different as we’ve seen with the steps that Mr. Bartlett lists in his article.

also note, that, in my “Messages” program, the screen you see in step 2 also has a “general notifications” setting. in there, you can change the default sound (and other settings) for all your “general notifications”.

My old LG Android phone let me know I had a text message by repeating a tone until I looked at it. My new Moto g power only tones 1 time. Can I adjust to let it tone more than once.

When i follow you instructions and come to Step 4 there is no “Sound” choice on my screen, so this did not help. Before the phone is out of warranty I would love to know if this is a fault with my particular phone.

i used to be able to have a tone for each of my contacts so i knew who was texting me. after the new update i no longer have that option,,, its so frustrating and very unhandy. i like knowing who the text was from by the tone i had set. why change somthing that clearly was working well for so many people??!!

In response to people with no sound on text – had the same problem and tried everything I could find on line – all my sounds were on etc – here’s what worked – ho to individual on text – not the list of all texts – hitbthe 3 dots on the individual – at the bottom is a bell outline – tap it and it will turn blue – you will now have sound with incoming text – may have to do it or at least check who you get texts from – halleluyah!

It’s been years but I still miss my Windows phone. It was comprable to an iPhone very easy to use. but since more people chose Android or iPhone than Windows phones they stop making apps to support it and stop supporting the apps that were there. It was a better product but people are sheep & follow the herd no matter how stupid. Android is complicated but I’m not going to stump up hundreds of dollars for a phone I can get for free with my contract nor do I want to constantly change phones every few years. I am trying to set an individual tone for one particular person’s texts. Evidently there is no option to add from library. How lazy or stupid are the techs?

I agree with above comments. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. I loved having individual ringtone & text notifications for each person. It added much needed organization to my life. This one notification for all is a headache, adds stress & needless interruptions every day. No personality – it’s like one robot says all. Inefficient. Android is supposed to fix & improve not go backward in time. This is a downgrade, NOT an upgrade. Next time I’m getting an iPhone.

Just amazing. So many things like setting text tones for individuals that could easily be done on an iPhone require installing special apps or following some arcane instructions for an Android.. My wife convinced me that Androids were so wonderful that I’d be crazy to get another iPhone. So untrue

no i have verizon as my default message app on my android so these aren’t very helpful, i updated the device and not sure if that is what changed the ringtone to what it currently is, just want it changed back to what i had before the update.

I was able to change the ringtones for message notifications, or so it says. But the phone still uses the default tone even though it shows something different (my newly changed ringtone) in my Notifications settings and in the Message+ app settings. Did I miss a setting somewhere else? Because it’s definitely not using the notification ringtone that it shows as being set for messages.

This does not work. Under notification there is ONLY a box that can be checked or unchecked.

Notification sounds are just one of many ways you can customize your Android , and each version of Android refines the process. Your Android has a setting for the default notification sound for all apps; you can also change sounds app by app. Here’s how to change the default sound, and how to change the notification sounds for Google Messages, Gmail, and the Phone app.

Set Custom Ringtones for Contacts

Open Contacts , tap the name, tap the three-dot menu , tap Set Ringtone , choose the desired ringtone from the list that appears, then tap Save .

How to Change the Global Default Sound

Open Settings .

Tap Apps & Notifications .

Tap Notifications .

Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Advanced .

Tap Default notification sound .

Then you can browse the ringtones page, which is split into categories including My Sounds, Pixel Sounds, Classical Harmonies, and others. At the top, it says what the current default is. In this case, it’s called Chime–Pixel Sounds.

If you’re using a non-Pixel phone, your ringtone options will be different.

Change the Notification Sounds by App

You can also change the notification sound in popular Android apps including Messages, Gmail, and the Phone app.

Google Messages

If you get a lot of notifications and want to know without looking that it's a new text message, you can change the notification sound easily. Use your own sound or any of the sounds that come pre-loaded on your Android smartphone. Here's how to change the notification sound in the Google Messages app.

Open the Google Messages app.

Tap the three-dot menu in the top right.

Tap Settings .

Scroll down to Other.

Tap Default .

Tap Advanced .

Tap Sound .

If you don't see these menu options, look for Other notifications > Sound.

You’ll see the same options as above for the global default sound.

Get lots of emails? Change the notification sound for any Gmail address that syncs with your smartphone. This way, you know by sound if you've got a new email, and whether it's personal or work-related. Here's how to change the notification sound in the Gmail app.

Open the Gmail app.

Tap the hamburger menu .

Scroll down and tap Settings .

Tap your email address.

You can change the notifications sounds for each email address you have synced on your phone.

Tap Manage notifications .

Tap Advanced > Sound . Choose from the available options.

Android smartphones from the same manufacturer, such as Google or Samsung usually have the same default ringtone. Thus, when several Google Pixel owners are in the same room, no one knows whose phone is ringing unless they've changed the default. Here's how to do it.

Open the Phone app.

Tap Sounds and vibration .

Tap Phone ringtone .

Choose from the available options.

How to Add Custom Notification Sounds

There are two ways to get custom sounds for your Android: downloading them from an app or creating your own. One popular app is called Zedge , which has thousands of free notification sounds and ringtones in all sorts of categories (music genres, sound effects, etc.). You can create and set custom ringtones right from the app.

You can also create a custom sound from your favorite song or movie line, for example. In this case, you’ll need to use an Android file manager to add the ringtone to your smartphone.

Here's how to manually add a custom sound to your settings.

Go to Settings > Apps & notifications > Notifications.

Scroll down and tap Advanced > Default notification sound .

Tap My Sounds .

Tap + (plus sign).

Find and select your custom sound.

Your new ringtone should appear in the list of available ringtones in the My Sounds menu.

To set up flashing light notifications on an Android, tap Settings > Accessibility > Hearing > Flash Notifications . Next to Camera Light and Screen, turn on Flash Notifications . If your Android doesn't support flash notifications, check for third-party apps on the Google Play Store.

While you can't completely get rid of the "sticky" AVG Antivirus notification, you can minimize it. For Android 10 or later, tap and pull down the status bar, tap and hold the AVG notification, and then tap Details . Tap Sticky or Permanent , and select Minimize notifications .

To show notification numbers on app icon badges, open Settings and tap Notifications > App Icon Badges > Show With Number .

How to Set Custom Message Tone on Samsung Galaxy Phones

Samsung offers the messaging tone setting in a better way as compared to others. Here’s how to assign a different message tone for contacts on Samsung Galaxy phones:

Step 1: Launch the Samsung Messages app . Open the conversation with the contact whose tone you want to change.

Step 2: Tap on the three-dot icon and select Notification Sound. Select the tone that you wish to use.

Follow these steps to set a custom message tone on OnePlus.

Step 1: Launch the OnePlus SMS app on your phone. Open the chat of the person for which you want to set a different tone. If there is no previous chat history, compose a message.

Step 2: Tap the three-dot icon at the top. Choose People & options.

Here are the steps:

Step 1: Open Settings on your phone and go to Apps or Installed apps.

Step 2: Look for your messaging app. Tap on it.

Step 3: Tap on Notifications. Now depending on your handset, things will be slightly different here. If you own a dual SIM phone, you will see SIM 1 and SIM 2. Tap on the SIM for which you want to set a tone. On other phones, you will either see Advanced or Incoming Messages. Tap on it.

Pro Tip: Inside App settings, wherever you see a standing bar before the toggle, it indicates that you can access more settings within the option. So tap on it to reveal extra settings.

If you aren't noticing a Notification folder in your Internal Storage you can easily create one. Simply tap on the 3 dots > Create folder > name the folder Notifications.

If you are unable to hear your Notification sounds, ensure you have set your Sound Mode has been set to Sound. You can check by heading into your Settings > Sounds and Vibrations > Sound Mode > Sound.

This guide is based on the Voice Recorder app pre-installed on your Galaxy device. You will first need to have saved a Voice Recording within the app before proceeding with the below steps.
