Read a brief summary of this topic

modern dance , theatrical dance that began to develop in the United States and Europe late in the 19th century, receiving its nomenclature and a widespread success in the 20th. It evolved as a protest against both the balletic and the interpretive dance traditions of the time.

The forerunners of modern dance in Europe include Émile Jaques-Dalcroze , proponent of the eurythmics system of musical instruction, and Rudolf Laban , who analyzed and systematized forms of human motion into a system he called Labanotation (for further information, see dance notation ). A number of the modern dance movement’s precursors appeared in the work of American women. Loie Fuller , an American actress turned dancer, first gave the free dance artistic status in the United States. Her use of theatrical lighting and transparent lengths of China-silk fabrics at once won her the acclaim of artists as well as general audiences. She preceded other modern dancers in rebelling against any formal technique, in establishing a company, and in making films.

Isadora Duncan, ink on paper by Edmond van Saanen Algi, 1917; in the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C.

Dance was only part of Fuller’s theatrical effect; for another American dancer, Isadora Duncan , it was the prime resource. Duncan brought a vocabulary of basic movements to heroic and expressive standards. She performed in thin, flowing dresses that left arms and legs bare, bringing a scale to her dancing that had immense theatrical projection. Her revelation of the power of simple movement made an impression on dance that lasted far beyond her death.

Formal teaching of modern dance was more successfully achieved by Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn . St. Denis based much of her work on Eastern dance styles and brought an exotic glamour to her company. Shawn was the first man to join the group, becoming her partner and soon her husband. Nonballetic dance was formally established in 1915, when they founded the Denishawn school.

From the ranks of Denishawn members, two women emerged who brought a new seriousness of style and initiated modern dance proper. Doris Humphrey emphasized craftsmanship and structure in choreography , also developing the use of groupings and complexity in ensembles. Martha Graham began to open up fresh elements of emotional expression in dance. Humphrey’s dance technique was based on the principle of fall and recovery, Graham’s on that of contraction and release. At the same time in Germany, Mary Wigman , Hanya Holm , and others were also establishing comparably formal and expressionist styles. As in Duncan’s dancing, the torso and pelvis were employed as the centres of dance movement. Horizontal movement close to the floor became as integral to modern dance as the upright stance is to ballet . In the tense, often intentionally ugly, bent limbs and flat feet of the dancers, modern dance conveyed certain emotions that ballet at that time eschewed . Furthermore, modern dance dealt with immediate and contemporary concerns in contrast to the formal, classical, and often narrative aspects of ballet. It achieved a new expressive intensity and directness.

Another influential pioneer of modern dance was dancer, choreographer, and anthropologist Katherine Dunham , who examined and interpreted the dances, rituals, and folklore of the black diaspora in the tropical Americas and the Caribbean. By incorporating authentic regional dance movements and developing a technical system that educated her students mentally as well as physically, she expanded the boundaries of modern dance. Her influence continues to the present day.

Like Dunham, Trinidadian-born dancer and choreographer Pearl Primus studied anthropology. Her studies led her to Africa (she ultimately took a Ph.D. in African and Caribbean studies), and her choreography explored African, West Indian, and African American themes.

Lester Horton , a male dancer and choreographer who worked during the same period as Dunham and Primus, was inspired by the Native American dance tradition. He was involved in all aspects of the dance, lighting, sets, and so on and also was a noted teacher, whose students included Alvin Ailey, Jr., and Merce Cunningham ,

Eventually rejecting psychological and emotional elements present in the choreography of Graham and others, Cunningham developed his own dance technique, which began to incorporate as much ballet as it did modern dance, while his choreographic methods admitted chance as an element of composition and organization. Also in the 1950s Alwin Nikolais began to develop productions in which dance was immersed in effects of lighting , design, and sound, while Paul Taylor achieved a generally vigorous and rhythmic style with great precision and theatrical projection in several works responding to classical scores.

Cunningham was a prime influence on the development of postmodern dance in the 1960s and later. Based especially in New York City , a large number of new dancers and choreographers— Trisha Brown , Yvonne Rainer , Pina Bausch, and many others—began to abandon virtuoso technique, to perform in nontheatre spaces, and to incorporate repetition, improvisation, minimalism, speech or singing, and mixed-media effects, including film. Out of this context emerged artists such as Twyla Tharp , who gradually reintroduced academic virtuosity, rhythm, musicality, and dramatic narrative to her dance style, which was based in ballet and yet related to the improvisatory forms of popular social dance. ( See also Tharp’s Sidebar: On Technology and Dance .)

Since its founding, modern dance has been redefined many times. Though it clearly is not ballet by any traditional definition, it often incorporates balletic movement; and though it may also refer to any number of additional dance elements (those of folk dancing or ethnic, religious, or social dancing, for example), it may also examine one simple aspect of movement. As modern dance changes in the concepts and practices of new generations of choreographers, the meaning of the term modern dance grows more ambiguous .

Dance is the mirror of the soul and the oldest of the arts. It reflects the growing need of a person to communicate their joy or sorrow to others through their body. Almost all important events in the life of primitive man were marked by dancing: birth, death, war, the election of a new leader, the healing of the sick. Prayers for rain, sunshine, fertility, protection, and forgiveness were fulfilled.

Dance has existed and still exists in the cultural traditions of all people and societies. Over the long history of humanity, it has changed following cultural development.

Genres of dance do not emerge spontaneously, from nothing: each new style is a sum of numerous trends that exist not only in dance, but also in society, culture and art. Dance genres evolve and influence each other; that is why it is sometimes quite difficult to define what roots a certain genre has and what peculiarities it has comparing to other genres. This research is devoted to contemporary dance. For an amateur, this term is a synonym of the notion “modern dance”; however, these terms refer to different genres that should not be confused. Contemporary dance is also often mixed up with other dance styles or, due to the word “contemporary”, is even considered to be a term that denotes all dancing that is created and performed today. To eliminate this confusion, we will outline the border between contemporary dance and other dance genres. We will study the origins and essence of contemporary dance and compare it with such genres as classical ballet, contemporary ballet, and modern dance. The study is based on observation of literature sources devoted to contemporary dance and our observation of works of contemporary dance, live and on the video.

The 20th century brought dramatic changes to the life of the World community and, consequently, to art. Dance did not become an exception: in addition to classical ballet performed in theaters and folk dances that existed beyond luxurious concert halls, it gave birth to genres that were less formal but gradually became demonstrated equally with ballet. In the beginning of the 20th century, modern dance changed the society’s notion of dance and offered an approach that had had no precedent. Gradually, more dance genres “alternative” to ballet were emerging: neoclassical ballet, postmodern dance et al. These genres enriched and at the same time challenged each other. Contemporary dance emerged on the border of classical ballet, modern dance and postmodern dance; today it also includes several subgenres, such as non-dance, conceptual dance et al. The core of contemporary dance is an experiment and rule-breaking. Its focus is on showing of ideas and emotions with bright, expressive movements. Contemporary dance tests the abilities of human body and challenges them setting quite high standards to them; it requires perpetual and intense physical training (Li 250). A contemporary dancer switches from tension to full relaxation, performs “broken” movements, falls and rises. Plasticity, expressiveness and strength are peculiar to this dance. Sometimes a work of contemporary dance may have a topic and an explicit idea, but it may be also quite abstract and give a viewer opportunity interpret it on his/her own. Some choreographers use technology in their performances, for example, like Ben Duke’s Discombobulator (Duke); the works of contemporary dance are often created on the border of dance and theater, which significantly influences on the movements used in it.

The difference between classical ballet and contemporary dance is in the proportion of “instruction” and freedom of expression in choreography and performance. Classical ballet has the neat, strict framework that outlines the borders of a choreographer’s and a dancer’s creativity. Despite there are several basic classical ballet schools, such as Italian ballet, Russian ballet, British Ballet and French ballet, they all have common roots and are based on similar choreographic traditions. Having existed for several centuries, classical ballet has to some extent evolved: if we compare the ballet of the 18th century and today’s works, we will see certain difference in movements, costumes and the way of performing; besides, ballet has acquired some local traditions. However, the rules of classical ballet choreography remain a “constant” throughout the world. Wherever a viewer watches classical ballet, he/she will see traditional ballet costumes and recognizable movements that can be classified according to the basic movement vocabulary. In turn, contemporary dance has no “framework”: while classical ballet traditions are quite similar even in different countries, it is impossible to find even two single contemporary dance choreographers who use analogous set of movements. The arsenal of movements of contemporary dance has included the elements of different styles, including classical ballet; however, a choreographer has a right to fuse and distort them, for example, like in (Turner), or even do not use them at all. This freedom of contemporary dance gives birth to its second distinction from classical ballet, which is the way dances are performed. Contemporary dancers do not use classical ballet costumes and pointes; instead, they prefer very “laconic”, unpretentious costumes and often perform barefoot, like in (Turner); at the same time, sometimes the costumes may be quite extravagant, for example, like in Carolyn Carlson’s Double Vision where her skirt covers all the stage and forms a screen for projection (Carlson). One more distinction of contemporary dance from classical ballet is the ability of dancers to express their emotions. A dancer has opportunity to remain him/herself onstage and improvise demonstrating his/her ideas, emotions, personality. Very often, a dancer him/herself performs in the role of a choreographer.

Despite the common word “contemporary”, the genres of contemporary ballet and contemporary dance have substantial difference. Both genres seem to oppose to classical ballet, that is why it is interesting to compare them. Contemporary ballet is not as dependent on “ballet rules”; it gives a choreographer more freedom; it can be considered a mixture of traditional ballet school and modern dance that emerged in the beginning of the 20th century. The core of contemporary ballet choreography is a well-known set of classical ballet positions and movements; however, they are interpreted in a different way by contemporary ballet choreographers and are somewhat “modernized” by them: while in classical ballet, a performer keeps his body straight and reaching for upside, a contemporary ballet dancer twists, bends and curve (Finch). Contemporary ballet implies using pointes, and the suits are quite similar to those classical as well. A performance fulfilled in the genre of contemporary ballet may have no plot, or “story-telling”. However, while contemporary ballet can be called “modernized ballet”, contemporary dance is rather to be interpreted as “alternative to ballet”. Contemporary dance uses less elements from classical ballet, and in case these elements are used, they are strongly distorted. However, contemporary ballet and contemporary dance have some points of intersection, which are freedom from strict rules, reflection of spirit and cultural tendencies of the 20th and the 21th centuries and aspiration to experiments.

The words “modern” and “cotemporary” seem to be close synonyms; however, this is not true in relation to dance: despite both genres emerged in the 20th century and significantly differ from classical ballet, they have certain distinctions. Modern dance appeared in 1900s as a response to conservatism of classical ballet (Garofoli 6). This genre is the reflection of social processes of that period: during the first decades of the 20th century, the world was embraced by the revolutionary spirit and aspiration for substantial changes in all fields of life. Modern dance had many features that are characteristic for contemporary dance: dancers improvised with the movements of their bodies, ideas of dances and the way of performance. Dancing became more expressive and genuine; the costumes became simpler, and barefoot dancing became popular (7-8). Modern dances often expressed political and social ideas. We have already characterized contemporary dance as the “alternative” to ballet; correspondingly, modern dance can be considered “the revolution against ballet”. Contemporary dance is the “child” of modern dance; it is possible to say that they have much in common: contemporary dance also does not set limits to choreographers and gives opportunity to address today’s burning problems; it uses improvisation and encourages dancers to experiment. At the same time, the arsenal of movements of contemporary dance is broader and includes elements from different genres; it is also possible to state that the technique of contemporary dance is more advanced and requires bigger physical strength.

Genres of dance are in the state of perpetual interaction; they enrich each other with new ideas, emotions and movements. Contemporary dance is a separate genre of dance that has formed on the border of several genres having absorbed and modernized their elements. A work of contemporary dance may include movements taken from classical ballet, modern dance, or even movements that cannot be classified as those belonging to any genre. Contemporary dance can be characterized as an “alternative” to classical ballet and considered to have much in common with modern dance and contemporary ballet.

The sport and art of dance.

Many people play sports in their spare time. Some examples include football, basketball, and golf. But the surprisingly difficult sport of dance is commonly overlooked. History of Dance

Once upon a time there was dance! In dance there are many forms. There is Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip hop, partner dancing, modern, and country and western. Dance originated many, many years ago. People used it to express emotions and stories. As time went on so did new dance techniques. Ballet came into the world around the 15th century Italian Renaissance and it slowly became the backbone for all dancing styles. As Albert Einstein said “dancers are the athletes of God.”…

Dance Choreography

Although most scholars simply define it as the art of designing and arranging dance, American ballet icon George Balanchine distinguished dance choreography as “an expression of time and space, using the control of movement and gesture to communicate,” (Anderson 5). This definition puts emphasis on the rigid structure and body control required to successfully produce a piece of choreography, an idea not uncommon in the ballet community (Conoley-Paladino). Like Balanchine, modern dance icon Merce Cunningham defined dance choreography as “an art in space and time.” However, in contrast, he stated that “the object of the dancer is to obliterate” that art, drawing on the importance of…

Rain falling into a pound, an individual tying their shoe, a swan boureeing across a stage or man rolling across a stage can all be dance. One of the main focuses of todays lesson was basic technique. We concentrated on alignment, safe dance practice in ballet and body limitations. By this I mean, how far we can push our bodies with out being in risk of causing injury. Technique in ballet is the learning of movement and refers to a way of using the body in the correct alignment. Alignment in ballet refers to keeping the head, shoulders and hips vertically aligned. A dancer with good technique requires good placement, alignment and turnout. Turnout refers to completing movements with your legs rotated outwards using the six deep outward rotators of the hip joint (ball and socket). This promotes clean footwork, graceful port de bras (carriage of the arms) and correct positions, lines and angles. Ballet technique is the foundation principal of the bodies movement and form. It is an important aspect of ballet performance as ballet puts great emphasis on the method and execution of movement. When we talk about correct alignment in class, we are referring to the relationship of the skeleton to the line of gravity and the base of support. To improve and help achieve correct alignment we must apply correct technique skills to basic exercises.…

Center Stage and Save the Last Dance are both films that use dance as a major component of the plot. Center Stage use dance as not only a career, but as a way of life, while Save the Last Dance uses dance as more of a form of self-expression. Center Stage uses mostly a ballet based form of dance with some infusion of jazz in the mix, whereas the dance in Save the Last Dance is based more on hip-hop and contemporary dance with some ballet thrown in here and there. The reasons that those styles were used are because they serve very different purposes. Ballet tells stories, such as Swan Lake etc., it is used for that purpose. There are instances…

George Balanchine's Influence On American Dance

The world has always had dance. Whether it be as a form of worship, recreation, work or ritual, people have used movement to express their values and beliefs since the beginning of time. Throughout the years, dance has changed and grown and and taken on many forms of art as different choreographers bring their innovation and creativity to the table. I will be discussing two very different dances that have completely changed modern American dance. Martha Graham’s Lamentation, and George Balanchine’s Serenade.

George Balanchine, Le Ballet Comique De La Reine

When looking at the periods of dance it can be separated into Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Pre-Romantic, Romantic, Russian Classic, and Ballet Russes before we reach the Twentieth Century. Ballet began during what is known as the Italian Renaissance, and permeated French culture by Catherine de Medici’s marriage to the King of France. The very first endorsed “ballet”, Le Ballet Comique de la Reine performed on October 15, 1581, marked the beginning of theatrical and technical dance performances. During this time our first prominent ballet masters came about, including; Balthasar Beaujoyeaux, Pierre Beauchamp, Domenico of Ferrara, and Guglielmo Ebreo, to name a few. These early ballet masters created and built upon social dance and turned it into a technical spectacle. After much deliberation on what causes the alteration and growth of ballet over time, there was one constant throughout. Ballet masters from the Renaissance to current

King Louis XIV: Femininity In Ballet

Though ballet wasn’t originally intended for women, it was inevitable that the female race would rise above and eventually dominate this powerful yet delicate art. Femininity in ballet developed considerably after the reign of men in this art form during the 15th and 16th centuries, when men in mask and costume portrayed women in productions, and King Louis XIV’s elaborate productions starring himself in the 17th century. The Romantic Era ushered in a real exploration into the roles of gender, and ballets became a woman’s forte, full of love, sexuality, and femininity.

Essay On 1920s Dance

The 1920’s were a very interesting time period, especially due to the emergence and jazz and dancing with it. Generally when people talked about dancing back in the jazz age, they might think about the exuberant youth dances like the Charleston or Lindy Hop, or the theatrical dances of Fred and Ginger. Analysis Of Igor Stravinsky's Rite Of Spring

The word “ballet” brings to mind words such as “grace” or “beauty” when heard by many people. The definition itself states that it is a form of dance that uses precise steps and light, graceful motions. This definition was in the minds of those who attended the Théâtre des Champs-Élysèes in May 1913, but rather they were greeted with the complete opposite. When Igor Stravinsky’s ballet Rite of Spring opened, the audience was greeted with swift, chaotic music that quickly became a whirlwind of sound. The music softened and the curtains opened to a primitive dance, causing mass hysteria throughout the theatre. The audience felt they were being attacked, for they had paid and dressed in ornate gowns to see the beauty and grace they feel reflected who they were, but instead they were shown a primal, barbaric scene. This piece had disrupted the order and harmony that one could associate ballet with.

Winter Guard is during the spring and we are by ourselves performing in the gym, I started off in Winter Guard. My first season was

Show More Ballet and early modern dance vary in so many ways, yet have many similarities as well. It is commonly known that Ballet came before modern dance. Therefore, Ballet is somewhat of a basis for modern dance. Too many dancers, this makes perfect sense. Mainly because we can signify when we are using any kind of ballet technique when dancing, modern, to us it's obvious. Modern dance involves a lot of arm structure, spine alignment and a certain posture that is also required in Ballet. However, modern can also be very different from Ballet. For example, Modern dancing involves contorting, contracting, and a lot of improper posture that would be forbidden in a Ballet class. Martha Graham did an amazing job at turning ballet movement into modern …show more content… Her name was Anna Pavlova, and she was unlike any ballerina of her time. She, like Martha, had a releasing quality about her movement that was immeasurably beautiful to watch. Nonetheless, her posture would probably have been ridiculed by any master ballet teacher. But in my opinion, her movement as a ballerina really showed the beginnings to a different take on dancing. Although modern dance is known to be improper, there are many different elements that make up modern dance. These elements include techniques that basically give structure to modern dance. Some of these techniques include the graham technique which is a contraction and release, and the Horton technique which is laterals and flexibility. There are many more techniques which pertain to modern dance made by famous pioneers of early modern dance. Another person who was very important in the development of early modern dance was Isadora Duncan . Isadora Duncan was an enlightening element to behold. She developed within this rule free and natural movements inspired by the classical Greek arts, folk dances, social dances, nature and natural forces as well as an approach to the new American athleticism which included skipping, running, jumping, leaping and tossing. We have a lot to thank Isadora Duncan for in modern

Modern Dance Research Paper

Women 's rights by doris humphrey and ruth st. denis.

As ballets were about telling stories or formulating movements, modern dance broke the rules and started to focus more on individual expressions. Loie Fuller (1862 – 1928), Doris Humphrey (1895-1958), and Ruth St. Denis (1877-1968) were pioneering women who took a stand and used their dance performance to speak up for women’s rights. Using dance, they significantly contributed to the Feminist movement in which they embraced self-expression and creativity so that women could be acknowledged in the dance field and in the society as a whole. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, they found for women’s rights by “taking dance to a new form, and creating dances to speak directly and intimately to the viewer” (Au 89). Loie Fuller, Doris Humphrey, and Ruth St. Denis demonstrated the transformation of dance with their innovation of costumes and stage lighting, incorporation of foreign cultures into performance, and creation of natural movements and individual expression that rejected the formal structures of ballet to deform a woman’s body, allowing women to be free from stereotype of a traditional woman.

I decided to research one of the most influential Modern Dance pioneers; Martha Graham. Graham’s contributions to dance has often been compared to Picasso’s contributions to art and Stravinsky’s to music; in my opinion she opened up many new opportunities and possibilities for dance including the ability to learn free expression and honesty through movement.

Essay on Katherine Dunham: a Woman of Many Wonders

Influenced primarily by cultural roots and incredibly opportunity, Dunham had the luxury of studying in the West Indies as well as anthropological study of other cultural style dances. The West Indian experience changed forever the focus of Dunham’s life and caused a profound shift in her career. This initial fieldwork began a lifelong involvement with the people and dance of Haiti. And, importantly for the development of modern dance, her fieldwork began her investigations into a vocabulary of movement that would form the core of the Katherine Dunham Technique. Though many of Dunham’s primary influences lies within her multicultural experiences, Mark Turbyfill also seemed to play a large role in her future dance career, giving her private lessons despite his doubt in the opening of her student company (Kaiso! 187). Katherine Dunham has been list as an influence to “everyone from George Balanchine to Jerome Robbins, Alvin Ailey, Bob Fosse and Twyla Tharp. American dance, including ballet, modern dance, Hollywood and Broadway, would not be the same without her” (Aschenbrenner 226).

Martha Graham And Humphrey

Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey are known as the founders, or the pioneers of modern dance. They were of the first to begin the modern dance era, after Isadora Duncan. Graham and Humphrey reshaped the way people looked at dance giving it new meaning. During the 1900’s they defined modern dance and gave it clear recognizable movements that distinguish it from many other dances created in the past.

Horton became Ailey 's major influence, as he was his mentor that gave him a foundation and technique that allowed him to grow artistically. Even though he developed his own style, he still used Horton’s technique that emphasized a strong fluid torso and ease of movement. In his years to follow, Ailey founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York in 1958. Ailey’s dance company became very popular because of its multi-racial modern dance ensemble. Due to his modern, jazz and ethnic dance styles, and extensive world tours, Alvin Ailey became one of the leading figures in the 20th century modern dance, making modern dance popular all over the world. Ailey is a significant artist to me because he paved the way for

Along the way, Ailey changed the landscape of modern dance by developing new audiences for its performance through a consistent combination of exceptional artistry and wellcoordinated community outreach programs. In all, Ailey invigorated the art of dance with his distinctive creative imagination, his “blood memories” of cultural formations he witnessed as a child-- including the jook joint and the black church --and the strong survivalist ethic he learned as an African American man born in the

Essay about Isadora Duncan's New Dance

At the end of the 19th century, ballet was the most prominent form of dance. However, to Isadora Duncan, "ballet was the old order that needed to be overthrown, an embodied symbol of all that was wrong with oversymbolized 19th century living" (Daly 26). Duncan believed that the over-technical, over-standardization of ballet was not what dance should be about. Her vision of dance was one of emotions, ideas, social betterment, and the complete involvement of the body, mind, and soul (26). With these ideas in mind, she began to create a new form of dance; what she referred to as the "new dance" (23), and what is now known as modern dance. In creating this new dance, she was inspired by composers such as
