Birmingham Hippodrome is one of the UK's premier presenting theatres with more than 550,000 people visiting each year. A further 450,000 engage with the theatre's festivals, educational programmes and produced work.
It's the place to go to see large scale musicals, such as the Lion King , ballets such as Rambert on Peaky Blinders, opera, dance, drama and comedy. And the venue is probably most-loved for its pantomime, which first began at the theatre back in 1957.
You'll find the Hippodrome on Hurst Street in Southside, just a short walk from Bullring and New Street Station and right in the heart of Chinatown and the Gay Village. There has been a theatre here since 1899, when it was known as the Tower of Varieties before becoming the Hippodrome in 1903.

At the end of 1999 the theatre began a £35million redevelopment, reopening on November 11, 2001. Improvements included a 206-seat studio theatre, new bars, dressing rooms and improved disabled access.
There are some amazing shows coming up over the next 12 months at Birmingham Hippodrome. Here is all the information you need on what's on, the best places to park, how to get there from the station and where to eat beforehand.

Birmingham Hippodrome parking
Birmingham Hippodrome does not have its own car park so you're best to park in the Arcadian Car Park, which is opposite the theatre. Find it in Bromsgrove Street, B5 6NU. It has vehicle registration recognition technology rather than issuing a pay-and-display ticket for your stay. There are 508 spaces in this car park, and evening parking costs £7.50 from 5pm to 2am.
Other car parks in the area include:
Thorp Street - 64 spaces, this costs £6 for 12 hours parking
Pershore Street - 100 spaces, this costs £3.50 for four hours and £4.50 for six hours
Ladywell Walk - 23 spaces, before 6pm 3 hours £6, 5 hours £8.50; after 6pm, 12 hours £12.50
Restaurants near the theatre - where to eat
Birmingham Hippodrome is right next to The Arcadian and all the restaurants of Chinatown so there's lots of places to choose from. You could go for Kyoto Sushi, Cafe Soya, Persian food at Persia restaurant, Latin classics at Las Iguanas, Miyako Teppanyaki Japanese cuisine or pizza at Caffe Di Milano.
Within the theatre, there are Foyer Bars on both the Circle and the Stalls levels and a Coffee Bar in the Front Circle Foyer plus kiosks too where you can buy ice cream.
Or, for a real treat, you could book one of the special packages at The Proscenium Lounge, which include exclusive entry to the Lounge 90 minutes before the performance and during the interval, a complimentary drink, a selection of savoury nibbles and use of the private bar.

Directions from the stations
You can get to the Hippodrome via New Street or Moor Street Stations. Here are the directions suggested by the theatre bosses:
Directions from Moor St Station On exiting Moor Street station, use the crossing on the left hand side, rather than the one to the right, and cross over the road towards the Bullring. Follow the road around to the right and walk underneath the underpass. On exiting the underpass, keep walking straight down the road past an entrance to the Bullring and Debenhams on your left hand side. Walk straight down to the traffic lights. Turn left here, crossing Smallbrook Queensway and onto Hurst Street. One hundred yards on the right side is the theatre. Distance approximately 0.5 miles, 10 minute walk.
Directions from New St Station When exiting on to the station concourse, please follow the exit signs for the Southside Exit. This exit will take you on to Hill Street and has both steps and a disabled lift. Cross over the road at the crossing point and turn left – towards the lower end of Hill Street. Carry on straight over the double crossing at the Smallbrook Queensway Junction and carry on to Hurst Street. The theatre is on your right. The walk is less than five minutes away from the station exit.
