Composition Projects
Unit summary.
In this unit on Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible , students will explore the thematic topics of history, community, and truth. Written during the McCarthyism scare of the 1950s, the play underscores the importance of remembering the events of our collective past. In exploring the circumstances of the Salem witch trials, which occurred centuries prior to Senator Joseph McCarthy’s communist “witch hunt,” Miller raises questions about the devastating impact that corruption, herd mentality, and vengeance can have on a community.
In addition to the play, students will read several paired texts that add to their analysis of the core text. Through reading excerpts of Maryse Condé’s I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem , which is the story retold from the slave’s, Tituba’s, perspective, students can analyze the impact of narration and point of view in a work of fiction. The nonfiction readings “Herd Behavior,” “On Tragedy,” and “McCarthyism” provide a foundation on which students can build their analysis of the play. And finally, Shirley Jackson’s short story “The Lottery” and Margaret Atwood’s poem “Half-Hanged Mary” allow students to explore similar themes in different genres.
While reading and analyzing the works of fiction and nonfiction in this unit, students will be working to develop their literary analysis skills, speaking and listening skills, and writing skills.
At Match, students have a Composition class 4 days per week in addition to English class. Below, we have included Supplementary Composition Projects to reflect the material covered in our composition course. For teachers who are interested in including these Composition projects but do not have a separate Composition course, we have included a “Suggested Placement” to note where these projects would most logically fit into the English unit. While the Composition projects may occasionally include content unrelated to English 10, most have both a skill and content connection to the work students are doing in their English 10 class.
In the English lessons of Unit 2, students will focus on analyzing author’s craft, investigating how authors use various techniques to create mood, tone, character, point of view and theme. In these parallel Composition projects, students will learn to craft effective literary analysis essays expressing their thoughts on various authors’ uses of literary techniques to create mood, tone, character, and point of view. Additionally, students will be asked to try on various techniques for appealing to an audience, including practice with establishing a specific tone and mood in their own writing. While the writing days described in the English unit are exclusively on-demand pieces of writing, the Composition projects are a blend of on-demand writing and process writing so students have exposure to writing for a range of topics, timeframes, and purposes.

Writing Focus Areas
Specific skills to focus on when giving feedback on writing assignments
English Lessons Writing Focus Areas
There are notes throughout this unit that encourage the teacher to use analysis of their students’ writing in order to determine the areas of focus for writing instruction in this unit. One suggested area of focus is on teaching students to use partial quotations to support their analysis and arguments rather than entire sentences or multiple sentences. A potential spiraling area of focus is ensuring students write a thesis statement that addresses the prompt and previews what is to come in the essay.
Composition Projects Writing Focus Areas
Below are the writing focus areas that are recommended for the Composition projects described in this unit. Each focus area comes from a particular row and column of our Composition Writing Rubric and more detail about each area of focus is provided in the description of each specific project. The teacher should feel free to substitute or revise these writing focus areas in order to meet his/her students where they are and help students improve their writing in ways that authentically address the students' areas for growth.

A letter to John Proctor from his wife Elizabeth as he awaits execution would not likely contain her grievances. She has made them known to him prior to his imprisonment, so there would be no need to air them anew. Elizabeth is a woman who has been wounded by John's infidelity with Abigail, but she is not a cruel woman, and she would not inflict torture upon John as he awaits the noose.
What Elizabeth would likely write to her husband is an expression of her admiration for his moral courage. He refuses to confess to witchcraft because he is not guilty of practicing it. He understands that he will leave behind a growing family, but like Rebecca Nurse, he will not gamble his immortal soul by lying to the court and renouncing his faith even though it would preserve his earthly life.
Elizabeth may choose to elaborate on the feelings of responsibility she feels for John's affair with Abigail. She has already told him that she feels that her coldness and suspicion drove him from her, and she may wish to say more about that. In doing so, she would attempt to help alleviate his feelings of guilt and remorse.
Because she is a covenanted Christian and a Puritan, Elizabeth may wish to tell John to search himself not for his sins, but for the good qualities that would suggest that he is among the elect who will meet God in heaven.

In such a letter, Elizabeth Proctor might also address the event that turned the tides of the court against John: when she lied in court about her reason for dismissing Abigail Williams from their service. This is information that would have completely discredited Abigail and could possibly have ended the whole debacle of the trials.
We know that Elizabeth fired Abigail because the girl was having an affair with her husband. John told the truth to the court about Abigail despite the damage it might do to his reputation. He promised Deputy Governor Danforth that Elizabeth could not lie and that she would verify his story, so Danforth questioned Elizabeth without allowing her to speak with John first, in order to test her. In fact, he did so in front of John, with John's back turned.
Elizabeth, after what seems like a good deal of agonizing over the matter, does eventually lie to Danforth, telling him that she fired Abigail only because the girl didn't please her; she wants to protect her husband's reputation so badly that she values it over even her own honesty. This lie seems to confirm Danforth's suspicions that John is dishonest (which he is not), and when John tells Elizabeth that he'd told the court the truth, her utterance of "Oh, God!" shows her own pain and regret. I imagine that she would explain to him why she lied this one time when he knew that "In her life . . . she have never lied."

The best source for ideas on this one can be found in the play itself, at the end of Act Four, when Elizabeth and John talk. In this poignant exchange between the two of them, John expresses a desire for forgiveness for what he has done. Elizabeth states,
"I have sins of my own to count. It needs a cold wife to prompt lechery...I counted myself so plain, so poorly made, no honest love could come to me."
In that vulnerable and touching confession, Elizabeth admits that she had been cold and unkind to her husband, and that certainly didn't help matters. She was cold and unkind because she was insecure; she thought she was too plain and unlovable to have his affection. Her own self-loathing drove her to turn from him.
If you look at that conversation as a guide for her letter, it will help a lot. I would start the letter off with general news of how she is doing in the jail, how her pregnancy is going. Then, move on to the topic of her feelings that she refers to above: how she regrets her behavior towards him, how she wishes she had been more kind. I would also have her express remorse for their lives that are lost, but also, as she does in real conversation in the play, try to offer him support in whatever decision he decides to make. Elizabeth, in the end of the play, doesn't force her will on him. Rather, she states,"As you will I would have it," and lets him go to the gallows, because he had chosen to do so. So, in the letter, I would have her express encouragement to him, coaxing him to trust himself and believe in himself to do the right thing.
I hope that those thoughts help a bit; it's an interesting assignment, and gratefully, the play provides a lot of clues as to what was on her mind during those hard times in prison. Good luck!

Teachers: Here are some writing assignments that you can assign during The Crucible unit. Student samples of some of these assignments can be accessed at the " student work " page below. I also have linked directly to a sample of the assignment directly from this page.
- After completing internet research on The Puritans, the class will work collaboratively on a " Guide to Puritan Life ". ( One group of my students fabulously put this assignment in a Ten Commandments format, but that's not required .)
- Assign students to do research on one of these four topics: 1) Hollywood Ten/Hollywood Blacklist 2) Senator Joseph McCarthy 3) House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) 4) "Red Menace" or Communist threat/anti-Communism in the US . Hand out slips randomly to students, assuring that an equal number of students receive each topic. Students will work individually, then bring their research to class. In groups, students will work together, compiling their information, to create a presentation for the class on their topic. They must also illustrate how their topic relates to either The Crucible or Arthur Miller.
- Write a newspaper story about the appearance of witchcraft in Salem.
- Write a monologue in the voice of one of the main characters in the play, describing their situation at the end of Act Two.
- Write the arrest warrant for Elizabeth Proctor, Martha Corey and Rebecca Nurse.
- Write a tabloid-style story about the affair between Abigail and John Proctor and how the truth is revealed in the courtroom in Act Three.
- Stage a mock-trial in class. Have some students be the accusers, and some be the accused. Afterward, have them write a reflection: What would they have done? Sold out their friends? Potentially face death? Go along with something you know isn't true?
- Write an obituary for John Proctor
- In groups, students will come up with their own notes on The Crucible.

An Exploration of The Crucible through Seventeenth-Century Portraits

Act 1 is always the most difficult for the students to understand, as 13 out of the 21 characters are introduced within this section alone. After reading act 1 of The Crucible , students create Trading Cards to describe and analyze an assigned character. Then, they explore portraits of Puritans online to assist them in creating a portrait of the character and present a rationale to explain their work of art. A “Portrait Gallery” is set up around the classroom, so the students are able to refer to portraits during later acts and better understand the characters' motives and relationships.
Featured Resources
From theory to practice.
As The Crucible is a play, it is easy to incorporate the dramatic aspect of the arts by including lessons on the social purpose of a play and more practical elements, such as blocking and performing. However, incorporating the visual arts into a unit on The Crucible is challenging, as the Puritans themselves forbade, as Miller writes, "anything resembling a theater or ‘vain enjoyment.'" This lesson allows the teacher to incorporate a creative activity, in that students create drawings, paintings, or collages of the characters.
Still, Osburg highlights a serious problem that can occur during such imaginative assignments, and one that teachers must keep in mind when instructing this lesson: students could easily "miss the point of the work or confound the author's intent" (56). It is the teacher's job, as Osburg argues, to "hold them responsible for actual knowledge of the text and the time period." Indeed, students must demonstrate creativity and imagination; however, if they do not display close-readings of the text and original paintings, the project will be for naught.
