General Education

One of the hardest parts of writing a research paper can be just finding a good topic to write about. Fortunately we've done the hard work for you and have compiled a list of 113 interesting research paper topics. They've been organized into ten categories and cover a wide range of subjects so you can easily find the best topic for you.
In addition to the list of good research topics, we've included advice on what makes a good research paper topic and how you can use your topic to start writing a great paper.
What Makes a Good Research Paper Topic?
Not all research paper topics are created equal, and you want to make sure you choose a great topic before you start writing. Below are the three most important factors to consider to make sure you choose the best research paper topics.
#1: It's Something You're Interested In
A paper is always easier to write if you're interested in the topic, and you'll be more motivated to do in-depth research and write a paper that really covers the entire subject. Even if a certain research paper topic is getting a lot of buzz right now or other people seem interested in writing about it, don't feel tempted to make it your topic unless you genuinely have some sort of interest in it as well.
#2: There's Enough Information to Write a Paper
Even if you come up with the absolute best research paper topic and you're so excited to write about it, you won't be able to produce a good paper if there isn't enough research about the topic. This can happen for very specific or specialized topics, as well as topics that are too new to have enough research done on them at the moment. Easy research paper topics will always be topics with enough information to write a full-length paper.
Trying to write a research paper on a topic that doesn't have much research on it is incredibly hard, so before you decide on a topic, do a bit of preliminary searching and make sure you'll have all the information you need to write your paper.
#3: It Fits Your Teacher's Guidelines
Don't get so carried away looking at lists of research paper topics that you forget any requirements or restrictions your teacher may have put on research topic ideas. If you're writing a research paper on a health-related topic, deciding to write about the impact of rap on the music scene probably won't be allowed, but there may be some sort of leeway. For example, if you're really interested in current events but your teacher wants you to write a research paper on a history topic, you may be able to choose a topic that fits both categories, like exploring the relationship between the US and North Korea. No matter what, always get your research paper topic approved by your teacher first before you begin writing.

How to Write a Great Research Paper
Even great research paper topics won't give you a great research paper if you don't hone your topic before and during the writing process. Follow these three tips to turn good research paper topics into great papers.
#1: Figure Out Your Thesis Early
Before you start writing a single word of your paper, you first need to know what your thesis will be. Your thesis is a statement that explains what you intend to prove/show in your paper. Every sentence in your research paper will relate back to your thesis, so you don't want to start writing without it!
As some examples, if you're writing a research paper on if students learn better in same-sex classrooms, your thesis might be "Research has shown that elementary-age students in same-sex classrooms score higher on standardized tests and report feeling more comfortable in the classroom."
If you're writing a paper on the causes of the Civil War, your thesis might be "While the dispute between the North and South over slavery is the most well-known cause of the Civil War, other key causes include differences in the economies of the North and South, states' rights, and territorial expansion."
#2: Back Every Statement Up With Research
Remember, this is a research paper you're writing, so you'll need to use lots of research to make your points. Every statement you give must be backed up with research, properly cited the way your teacher requested. You're allowed to include opinions of your own, but they must also be supported by the research you give.
#3: Do Your Research Before You Begin Writing
You don't want to start writing your research paper and then learn that there isn't enough research to back up the points you're making, or, even worse, that the research contradicts the points you're trying to make!
Get most of your research on your good research topics done before you begin writing. Then use the research you've collected to create a rough outline of what your paper will cover and the key points you're going to make. This will help keep your paper clear and organized, and it'll ensure you have enough research to produce a strong paper.

Research is an analysis aimed at the discovery of new facts or revision of existing theories. It consists of several steps. The most common are:
- Research methodology setting
- Research problem statement
- Data extraction and gathering
- Assessment of the gathered data
- Conclusions summarizing
What are the purposes of research?
The intentions are countless, but here are the general ones:
✨ to accept or reject a hypothesis; ✨ to gather information on a phenomenon or subject; ✨ to initiate further research or to “dig deeper.”
Why is it important?
Research makes our life easier. The underlying cause of new discoveries is to understand how things work. If we acquire that data, we’ll know how to get the practical value out of it.
Think of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. As we meet our deficiency needs, its level grows. At the same time, the demand for new knowledge increases. That is why discovering new is a never-ending process.
That is all clear. But you may ask: why do I need a research skill in my day-to-day life?
After graduation, you will most likely still need research skills at work. No matter what the industry is. Either you decided to excel in science or form a hi-tech startup. If you want to achieve success, you should have strong research skills.
All in all, having research skills is one of the core elements of personal and social growth. It helps to generate additional findings or set new questions around existing knowledge.
Now let’s move on to the list of research topics.

Narrow Your Topic
Let’s say you selected that one topic from the list. What’s next? It’s time to outline the boundaries of the research. It should not be too broad or narrow . Its scope must strictly correspond to the problem’s scope under exploration.
What is the difference between a narrow and a broad topic?
Let’s look at three research topic examples:
- Eating Disorders. The topic is too general and comprehensive. If your research paper requires to be short, then there is no sense in choosing this topic. You better narrow it down.
- Eating Disorders in Young Females. In this topic, we try to segment the subjected populations to specify the research question. It is still rather broad but more focused.
- Anorexia in Young Females and Its Impact on Society. Here, we distinguish a particular type of eating disorder and leave a population segmentation. That is a perfect example of a narrowed topic. Now, it’s easier to ask specific questions, uncover insights and contribute to further research.
Focus on your narrowed topic and form a central research question. After that, research the existing data and find supporting facts. Don’t let your exploration be one-sided: explore different points of view. Compare and analyze counterpoints and draw conclusions.
After a profound studying, create a thesis statement to support your narrowed topic in a specific way.
To make things clear, use this step-by-step guide on finding and narrowing your topic.
Evaluate Sources
It takes a second to get access to billions of search results on any topic in Google. Most of the time, we jump through the first two or three links, and that’s it. If you seek quality, then it’s not the proper approach. You should acquire the skill of processing the sources.
What are the tips for sources evaluation?
- Forget about Wikipedia as a scientific source. Wikipedia is a free platform where any user can make edits. Extracting information from wiki without fact-checking isn’t a good academic practice. Great alternatives to Wikipedia are College e-libraries, scholarly databases, Google Scholar, etc.
- Explore well-respected professional research journals. They contain up-to-date research data and conclusions which shape the most relevant views and understanding of what is going on in the modern world.
- Visit libraries. We tend to overlook them in our digital era. But you can find super valuable sources for research there.
- Avoid personal blogs, opinion articles, and self-published books . There can be heavy use of bias.
3 Main Tips on Writing a Thesis Statement
After you decide on a research topic and sources, it’s time to write a thesis statement.
- Ask a question. Here are two options. In the first one, your professor can assign you a concrete question. If it’s not your case, then ask what interests you. What would you like to explore?
- Give an initial answer. Try to answer the question before in-depth topic exploration. Work out some hypotheses.
- Enrich the initial answer. Prove the initial hypothesis by detailing the research. Use the calculations and quantitative data to make your thesis credible.
To back up these tips, let’s look at a couple of example thesis statements from the StudyCorgi essay database:

How to Choose a Good Research Paper Topic?
While it may seem challenging to come up with a good research paper topic as you try your best to narrow things down, the trick is to choose something that influences you because you know it well and can support your arguments with relevant evidence. The subject should be well-structured and relevant to your thesis statement. Always take time to research the list of sources to compose your topic sentences as well to make them relate to your thesis part. It’s always best to check a good research paper introduction example before you start working on the paper and choosing your topic. Here are the steps to consider:
- Start With Observing Your Interests.
If you are confused with a variety of interesting topics for writing a creative essay, it’s better to decide what interests you the most. Don’t stick to easy research paper topics just to complete the task fast. If you are allowed to freely choose what to write an essay about, use the opportunity to create something unique. Write down the list of your interests and break down every idea into small certain topics. When you have a list in front of your eyes, it will be easier to make up your mind and start considering a particular issue.
Then you should examine what aspect of the topic is preferable for you to outline in your research paper . A list will save you here again. Use pros/cons template to include all the arguments and objections to the issues.
- Come Up With an Argumentative Research Question.
The most challenging part of choosing a competitive research paper topic is finding an aspect that poses some importance for your course and the subject per se. While it may seem that it is sufficient to make a general statement, your argumentation should include a clear research question. Consider asking yourself why you have chosen a particular topic and how your research will make it clearer or provide innovative solutions.
- Study Available Research Topic Ideas.
Since we have already mentioned the dangers of choosing something too broad, it is vital to narrow things down and brainstorm the list of possible research paper ideas that deal with the same subject. In other words, you can write down at least five different subjects and see whether you can find sufficient information to support them with the sources or statistical data. Remember the importance of your topic’s wording!
- Compose Strong Thesis Statement.
It must be done at the same time as you choose your research paper topic because these two concepts must be interconnected. Your subject must reflect your main idea of the thesis statement. Make sure that you have the list of sources prepared in advance to incorporate relevant information in your body paragraphs. As always, they must be the supporting evidence for your thesis statement’s idea and the research purpose.

100 Research Paper Topics and How to Choose One to Write About

What is the hardest part of creating a compelling research paper? Despite common belief, writing is not the biggest challenge on your way to success. However, trying to come up with a good research paper topic can be more complicated than writing research itself.
When choosing a topic, students can encounter a variety of issues, including a lack of creativity, insufficient essay writing skills and experience, or a lack of research material on the chosen topic. These and other issues may get in your way, holding you back from creating genuinely engaging thesis topics.

How can you overcome these problems in the process of choosing a topic? In this article, we are going to give you some tips that will make the whole process easier, and share a list of 100 good research topics from our custom essay writing services team.
How to Choose a Topic for a Research Paper
If you feel stuck with choosing a relevant and engaging topic, find a step by step guide that will help you generate interesting research topics with ease below:

1. Observing Your Interests
What really makes a research topic good is your genuine interest in it. Picking a topic that you are personally interested in can motivate you to do an in-depth study of it, and can make the whole writing process much easier.
Study your range of interests – break them down into separate topics and choose one that can create the most interest in terms of revealing the topic. If the topic is controversial, then it will be a good idea to define your point of view right away — to help refine the direction of your research.
Also, be sure not to pick research essay topics solely on what’s trending. While trending topics will definitely be relevant, the lack of interest can affect the overall quality of the work.
2. Make Sure You Have Enough Information to Write a Paper
If your genuine interest in a specific matter should be at the top of your priority list when choosing a topic, the availability of enough information should be your second highest priority.
Having a sufficient amount of materials to write your research paper is vital. Some of the resources you can look for are books, different scientific journals, online sources like blogs and websites, encyclopedias, etc. The more resources you can find, the easier it will be to create your own work.
Feeling Stressed Out When Need to Write an Essay?
No panic! One of our skilled writers will craft a well-researched, custom-written paper for you asap!
The more specialized and newer the topic for research is, the less information you are likely to find on it. Therefore, choosing such a topic, you have to be ready to face certain challenges in the process of writing. However, this does not mean that you should opt for easy research paper topics. Keep in mind that a good topic should not be too simple nor broad.
3. Follow Your Teacher’s Guidelines
Last but not least, don’t forget to keep your teacher’s instructions in mind when picking a topic. The requirements and limitations may vary depending on your academic level and your teacher’s preferences, and you have to bear them in mind. Also, it is always a good idea to confirm your topic with your teacher before you start writing—if they think it might be a poor choice, they will likely give you some guidance and will appreciate that you asked regardless.
Additional Tips
To give you some extra tips on the choice of a topic, here are the main features that characterize good topics for research papers:
- Relevance – the chosen topic has to be relevant for potential readers;
- Specificness – objectives (as well as expected results) of your study have to be focused and clear;
- Importance – a good topic should bring value and impact to your field of study—or the community as a whole;
- Trendiness – topics that are trending tend to spark more interest among readers due to their yet unexplored potential;
- Originality – it is important to focus your work on something that hasn’t been researched before to ensure scientific novelty and originality.
