Persuasive Essay: Why Homework Is Bad To Redress Students

They cannot concentrate, especially at school, with too much homework. A student’s mind should stay focused and calm. They should rest, if rest enough so that they can work with energy. The student should be given a certain amount of work so that they can be prepared if a test or an exam is near. But this does not mean that they should be given endless stacks of homework. By this, I mean when they are given a lot of homework for the next day, the student will gets upset and do not want to go to school because he doesn 't want punishment for what he couldn 't do. This is my personal opinion. Homework is a never-ending conflict at school, the students want less homework but the teachers have to give them the homework, so they can study at home. Lastly, I would say a student needs time to learn but also time to play and relax and to enjoy life with his family and

It is often believed that if homework is not taken for a grade anymore, then students will not do it causing them to score bad on their tests and their grades as a whole. However, in Dhahran High School Saudi Arabia, homework is counted as a learning behavior grade and not achievement. Due to this many do not do homework as often but study their own ways or work on their hobbies. Regardless, most students are still doing excellent on their tests and scoring well in the class. As a result, homework should not be taken for a grade in schools since it may negatively affect the students.

The teacher would give them extra school work to take home and do instead of being able to go home relax and have fun. Why Do Kids Have Recess

Recess is an important part in every child's life. Recess is a vital subject that most people overlook, rather we must understand so that children can have breaks and, for them to appreciate the reason why kids need recess. 44% of school’s administrators report cutting significant time from recess so there is more time for subjects like reading and math (Nanci Hellmich 2). Essay About Taking Away Recess

Should Teachers Be Able to Take Away Recess? Elementary school is the most important time of your life to learn all of your basic skills that you need in the future. The problem of taking away recess is that children need that time to let off steam, play, and socialize. Without that free time to be themselves they will be restless and not able to focus in class. Although taking away recess is a good way to punish for misbehavior, or getting homework done, taking recess away does not benefit both the student and teacher because it limits social opportunities, reduces physical exercise, and reduces the practice self control.…

And this is how we can make a difference. First, students in middle school should get less homework because it is busy work for everyone and wastes time. This helps many people, who could not attend college because they had no time for in-class schooling. This is especially helpful for parents and individuals who work full time jobs, and cannot afford to take the time off to go to school. Along with increasing our academic freedom, it also reduces the risk of a teacher favoring a student, or even worse having biased views against students.…

Persuasive Speech On Too Much Homework

Should american students get less homework.

Too much homework can cause stress and other health issues. Also, students are working more than the recommended amount of time on homework, and this takes away from family time and free time, as well as time for sleep. When it comes to doing homework, students also want time to relax and enjoy other activities. Shouldn’t students get less homework so that they can be happy and have more time with family and friends? Administrators, teachers, students, and parents need to address this issue and inform people about the effects of homework on students in America. If teachers and parents tried to reduce the amount of homework there would be a decrease in stress and anxiety and an increase in happiness! “Homework makes it so I can’t spend time with my kids and family and I resent

The Negative Effects Of Homework On Students In Elementary School

In almost all schools, teachers assign homework assignments to students starting in elementary school. When students begin to grow older and are faced with more challenging classes in junior high and high school, the workload begins to pile up. Students are now becoming more stressed and have anxiety because of the amount of work that is placed on them which is even taking a toll on their family life. Many students end up completing the assignment in order to just get credit for it without a regard for learning. But over the years, homework has begun to lose its purpose. Instead of the students focusing on only completing their homework in order to get good grades, they should be more focused on learning the material that they are studying. Without truly understanding the material in the classes that students might be taking, school is essentially a waste of time. The effects of mass quantities of schoolwork on students that are given by teachers leads students to underperform in school due to the mental stress and anxiety.

Why Is Homework Bad

Many teachers in today's schools give homework out on a daily basis, and teachers assume that it is helping students learn the information taught in the classroom. However it is doing quite the opposite causing many problems for students. There are three major impacts that homework has on students, it causes more stress, it affects the student's family, lastly it affects grades and test scores as a whole. Homework has many more negative affects on students, families, grades, and goals. However, even with the facts teachers still continue to assign busy work which is potentially dragging students down rather than helping them.

Why We Should Be Given Less Homework Argumentative Essay

Sandra Dodd once said, “Kids who are in school just visit life sometimes, and then they have to stop to do homework or go to sleep early or get to school on time. They’re constantly reminded they are preparing ‘for real life,’ while being isolated from it.” This is one side of an argument that has been going on for years, which is, “Should kids be given less homework?” Homework should be decreased because it is not valuable academically and students don’t have time to do homework after school.

Homework Is Too Much Of Homework

Homework has been around a long time. In fact, the first school made in the world was believed to be built sometime between 140 BC and 143 BC. While studies have proven that homework can have benefits, too much of it can be bad for students. Homework can take away their time for family/activities and can cause negative health effects. The amount of homework assigned to students should be decreased.

Why Kids Should Not Have Homework Essay

Students feel more stressed and turned off to learning, which is, a lifelong pursuit when it comes to homework. Too much homework turns kids off to learning and makes them less rather than more invested in school and learning. Are children having too much homework? There has been a big disagreement about if students should have homework or students should not have homework. Some people say they should not have homework and some say they should have homework. Children should not have homework, because it wastes all of the time out of school.

Why There Should Be No Homework Essay

Have you ever wanted to just shred up your homework or throw it out the window and have no consequences? Kids are assigned daily homework from the time they start kindergarten at the ripe young age of five. Is it really necessary? Does it even help better learning or even higher test scores? The amount of homework we do wastes time, money, paper, and trees because it’s practically the exact same thing we did in class that day. Homework causes kid’s and teen’s frustration, tiredness, little time for other activities and possibly even a loss of interest in their education. It also keeps everyone up; it has kids and teens staying up until they finish it, the parents trying to help them and the teachers grading it. So, I think that homework is

Benefit Of Homework

All this extra work is usually chalked up to be something that will help a student learn the topic, but if teachers are doing their jobs to get the important points across and time is being used well in class, than it should not be necessary. In an absence of homework students can instead spend the time usually wasted on often rushed, under quality work, studying the way that best suits them, or participating in an activity that will ease their stress from the long tiring days of school.

Why Should Students Limit Homework

Due to the fact, kids already go to school for eight hours and their brains shut down, causing health complications, too much homework can affect test scores, and kids have outside events, family, sports, church, and jobs to worry about. Some people agree with the idea of forcing teachers to have a limit on homework and some believe it has a beneficiary effect on students. But the negative effects are more damaging long-term.Than the benefits of it long-term. By limiting the amount of homework, given to students can increase the overall performance of the student and will leave them physically/mentally healthy. It will also give the children the chance to not miss out on the bonding time with family and friends. A happy child is a happy life for

Persuasive Essay : Why Homework Should Be Banned For Students?

Most people would agree that homework takes a lot of time after school and out of their daily lives. 7 hours of the 24 hour day are spent on school. Then including, the average amount of hours spent on homework everyday which is 3.5. That equals 10 hours of the 12-18 hours students are awake in the day. Additionally, an average student gets about 7 hours of sleep each night, when scientists have proven that teens need at least 9 hours. There are simple and easy solutions to these problems, one is to take away homework for students. This would help issues like, no sleep, bad grades, cheating, not being with family enough and more! 79% of the people that took the debate.org quiz thought that homework should be banned. This survey included teachers, students, and parents. There are many students that do sports or after school activities and have not a lot of time for homework. Nearly 6 out of 10/ 57% students do after school activities. As a personal experience, I know that I have cheer practice most nights for two hours each. This leaves only a tiny amount of time I can spend on homework, concluding in me having to stay up later to finish it all. The time you spend on homework each night, could be spent on getting exercise or spending time with people to become better human beings or getting greater social skills. If kids are always busy, they don't get enough sleep. Too much homework also could cause bad grades or kids to attempt to cheat on tests because not always knowing

The Trouble With Homework By Anne Murphy Paul

In my opinion, homework is very lengthy and over-done. Some teachers give multiple pages or packets of homework each night. My argument is not that homework should disappear completely, but that there should be a limit to how much a teacher gives per week. In other words, the homework should be shorter. The article The Trouble With Homework by Anne Murphy Paul says that most homework is “busy work”. This means that teachers constantly give homework just to keep the students busy, when it actually doesn’t benefit the student whatsoever.

The Pros and Cons of Homework Essay

When a class is almost over and a teacher starts assigning homework, every student's heart drops. When students have an excess of homework, they do not do as well. Even though homework is a good tool to help teachers teach students subjects, teachers should give less homework because too much homework causes mental health issues in students and less homework helps improve test scores.

Negative Effects Of Homework

As a high schooler, you get lots of homework which can easily cause you stress, but others like parents have another understanding of homework because they think it gives their children something to do besides sitting and watching the television. Also teachers tend to give out homework for the benefit of your learning skills or just of what you learned on that school day in general, which isn’t always helpful. The harsh thing parents and teachers don’t realize is the agonizing pain and life consuming of having large amounts of homework which causes us to have negative consequences.

We Need To Get Rid Of Homework

Homework not only takes up time but it pressures and stresses kids out. “Fifty-six per cent of the students in the study cited homework as a primary stressor in their lives, despite the fact that most U.S. students' homework load has remained relatively stable since 1984, according to the Brookings Institute's 2014 Brown Center Report on American Education”(Daily Mail Reporter). “Fifty-six per cent of the students in the study cited homework as a primary stressor in their

Persuasive Essay why Homework should be Banned

“Persuasive Essay why Homework should be Banned”

One of the main reasons homework is looked down upon is that it is repetitive and irrelevant to what is being taught. Pasi explains one reason why students do not finish their assignments is because the students may find the assignment is too plain or repetitive. Students explain that the homeworks given should be made more fun and current (Wilson). Often times, people will argue that the giving students “practice homework” will lead to greater knowledge, but drilling something you don’t understand doesn’t cause understanding. It merely causes frustration and boredom (Kohn). many explanations exist for why students are not trying or finishing their assignments at home,; the main reason recorded from students is that they were unsure of how to complete the work in the first place (Wilson).

Instead of giving out the same styled worksheets and readings, it has been suggested for teachers to assign other forms of homework to keep it relevant and current to the lessons in the classroom.teachers from around America have tried out homework alternatives such as reading everyday and group projects. An example of this would be a teacher from texas who assigned no extra homework. The only homework given was if the student had not finished their class work for that day. The teacher pushed the students to participate in different pastimes that also aide in student success such as playing outside, spending time with family, and reading (Students and Homework). We often times don’t think of playing soccer or participating in the family game night as homework, but recent experiments like the one just mentioned in Texas shows that giving children time to be children does improve self esteem, quality of life, and helps destress their life. All of this also aides in their classroom performance. in recent years a study was held in Marion County, Florida. Thirty-one schools around the county outlawed homework and substituted that with twenty minutes of reading a night with the students parents. As the study continued, there were varied feelings reported. However ultimately, the community as whole decided homework does not give elementary students an advantage (students and Homework).

This study shows that homework alternatives may be the way to go. Giving students a worksheet with the same problems over and over can be frustrating to the student and the parent. Teachers have been asked time and time again to introduce more exciting and more various homework assignments like projects, reading, and other “non-practice homework” (Kohn) As many people can attest to, homework assignments can be a huge cause of stress and anxiety in a child’s life. Children have tons of things to keep up with outside of school including sports, family obligations, clubs, volunteer work, religious activities, and many other things, and to add a couple hours of homework on top of it all can be extremely overwhelming. As talked about by trautwein et al. A student who spends ample time completing homework may experience a decreased ability to perform well in that subject. This is caused by the inability to keep the student focused on their work while they are in their own home, surrounded by distractions (qtd in Valle). For example, imagine a sixth grader who is taking a honors math class. This student is fresh into middle school and is figuring out who they want to be, therefore they are joining clubs, playing sports, and trying out instruments. All of this sounds fun until they get home at six o’clock in the evening and then have to complete the two hours of math equations that were assigned to them in class. This gives them no time for play, no time for family, and no time for adequate sleep. All of those things have been reported when we see scores drop and success rates plummet. Not only does overloads of homework introduce stress, it often is the reason for higher reports of exhaustion and anxiety. It may also lead to decreased time for personal time with family or friends. Since homework often times requires parent assistance with younger aged children, Homework also could bring up inequality issues because more lower class families have divorced parents, uneducated parents, or even parents who just don’t have time or care to assist their student (Matei and Ciascai). Students who spend too much time on homework are not always able to be as physically and socially active as needed for a child. The overload of homework young students have to complete on top of other things can and will negatively affect their grades.

The reason most often brought up in the debate of homework is that is oppresses the children’s ability to just be children. In the earlier, developmental stages of a child’s schooling, kindergarten through third grade, the required knowledge is known to be oppressive and damaging to young students instinct to play and use their imagination. This in turn damages their ability to learn and perform well in the classroom. Children learn best from playing and asking questions (Caplan). Simply giving a second grader a sheet of thirty multiplication problems isn’t going to help them learn it. It is instead making them use their brains in a way that haven’t learned to use it yet. Children are supposed to run around, play, and be imaginative. Homework doesn’t allow them to do any of those things. Because of the “one-size-fits-all” created curriculum we are noticing varied levels of readiness in students, as certain five year olds are ready to advance onto things some seven year olds aren’t even ready for yet. The required curriculum does not take these things into account which is obviously very damaging to the student, as not all students learn the same way and therefore are not able to perform all the same types of homework (Caplan). Loic Menzies explains, “whilst important, learning to play by social rules and norms is not the same as having the space to develop your own unique way of interacting with others. ‘Social adjusted-ness’ is not the same as ‘social fluency’”. This quote from Menzies sums up how homework and what is expected out of primary school aged children can be toxic to our society as a whole.

Therapists from all around say that problems in adult life are often rooted in problems we had in childhood. If teachers and schools do not allow children time and space for family, playing outside, exploring themselves, and using their imagination, then there is going to be gaps in the rest of their life. A stable, fulfilled childhood is what leads to stable, fulfilled adulthood.

Although giving homework in proportion can be beneficial to the student, it is not beneficial to the student body. Since no two people are going to learn the same, they aren’t going to get the same things out of it. Homework alternatives need be in place to help individualistic learning experiences. Things like art, reading, projects, and other ways to apply what they learn instead of just practicing it help students brains and their test scores. Places like Finland are already putting this strategy into place and the results are inarguable. In 2016 the OECD reported that Finland students are surpassing other children from all around the world. The report indicates that their success is due to the well-rounded style of schooling, where the days are shorter, homework is scarce, and family time is valued (Students and Homework). Young children need to be able to express their individual selves, not what the social norm is and homework is harming their ability to do so. Teachers need to allow students to go home and color, play in the dirt, enjoy family dinner, and just be children. Homework is okay in proportion but so is sugar, caffeine, and other things that are frowned upon for children. Too much of anything is not a good thing, including homework.

Homework Should Be Abolished

It is a common emotion to students regarding the distaste of homework, but legions of teachers know better because they recognize the importance of homework in the success of students in school and outside of school. I completely disagree with the statement that homework should be abolished. School without homework is not an image I can fathom. There are many reasons why homework should not be abolished as it is greatly beneficial towards the student. Homework improves the stability of the student in school allowing them to spend their time wisely and not only focus on play.

It allows the teacher to acknowledge the student’s weaknesses and in turn giving them an opportunity to improve and acquire new skills. Also, taking time each night to do homework is a chance for students to catch up on missed class and further reinforces the day’s lessons so it is permanently etched in the student’s mind where the information is stored and used when called upon.

“ She was very quick, it was a brief assignment, but she was done in a matter of hours when she had plenty of time. ”

Several studies have proven that homework, in fact, does improve the stability of the student in school. This strengthens the statement that time spent completing homework is time well spent. Rather than giving students another hour of leisure time, doing homework entitles the student to an hour of enriched education. This can greatly benefit the student, as consistently finishing homework will reap great rewards such as a favorable test score or report card.

Not only does homework accomplishment benefit the student, it also benefits the teacher as well.

Teachers receive the opportunity to see at what stage the student is by assigning homework. Furthermore, the teacher can identify the weaknesses of the student so they can ameliorate their study habits in hopes of pulling their grades up. Many students chose not to say when they are experiencing difficulties and it is often up to the teacher to find out. Homework is not set out only to serve students, but it is also definitely aimed to help teachers gain insight on their student’s progress.

Moreover, the meaning and goal of homework is profitable towards the students. It allows students who missed the day’s lesson to catch up with the rest of their classmates. Likewise, homework reinforces the new concepts taught that day and helps the student develop a deeper understanding of what they have learned. On the contrary, if teachers were to assign no homework daily, then the new ideas they have brought forth will fall on deaf ears and the students are the ones who lose out on the wondrous opportunity of learning something new. Are you ready to give up an opportunity where new notions are introduced and planted firmly within your mind?

It is incredulous to suggest that homework should be abolished. Although many may hate the mention of homework, no one can deny the fact that homework’s benefits overshadow its cons. To put it succinctly, homework should not be abolished! It helps with time management and organization skills, allows teachers the opportunity to find their students weaknesses so that they can help them to improve and lastly, it helps to reinforce things taught in school and help to gain a better understanding of the new ideas and concepts taught, engraving it inside students memories forever.

Homework Should Be Banned Essay

Homework is a set task that is given to students to be solved at home and submitted at school for examination. There are usually homework tasks set from most or all subject categories for submittal at different or clashing target dates. Failure to carry out these tasks on or before target times often carries penalties on the student concerned. It has become the norm for students to be under the pressure of homework and now seems to be one of the most defining criteriums for student performance grading.

In my argument, I don’t quite agree with the idea of homework in this way because it tends to eat into the times for play and rest at home after a very busy long day studying in school. With the high amount of homework tasks for almost all subjects, we tend to lose out on such leisure time at home. This should not be so. After all, – All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy

I find some of the homework to be too much and sometimes unnecessary after most of the exercises have been explored and tested in the classroom. Some of these tasks are better suited within the classroom premises as the tools, apparatus, and equipment are more available in the classroom than it is in the home environment. Moreover, the school classroom presents a better learning and less distracting environment than the home setting, hence, the homework at home may not present the best output for the student.

I find the school opening times absolutely acceptable from 9 am and I’m sure you would agree with me too, irrespective of you being a teacher or a student. However, if homework routines at home should outweigh the time for rest and other relaxation activities at home, then I can argue that the school opening times should then be much later than 9 am, in order to allow some more rest time for the students’ life pattern. That extra hours of sleep in the mornings can really brighten up your day and reduce stress levels. According to scientists and researchers, if you could squeeze in an hour or 2 of extra sleep you will look better, feel better and be better at your school or job performance.

why homework should be abolished persuasive speech

Homework has been around since 1905 and nothing revolutionary has happened or even changed about the way we do homework. Doing homework now is still pretty much the same thing as doing homework in 1905. Why?

Roberto Nevilis, an Italian man (that invented Homework), made homework back then for one main purpose, to punish his students. Some people argue that Horace Mann, an American man was the one that normalized homework during the 19th century and made it a default thing for all schools to include it in teaching. Why? Horace did this as he saw this as a way for kids to get extra learning which some kids may not want. Why would the kids not want more learning at home? The simple answer is that the children want to stay home and have time for themselves, family, or just friends. They don’t want to sit down and study as soon as they get home, but they are left with not much of a choice because if they don’t do those tasks their parents will be notified and the outcome of that is hardly palatable.

From another perspective, from some teachers, it can be said that homework is dished out to students not only for more learning at home but also to do a ‘Roberto Nelvis’ approach to their misbehaving students. While some may have adopted Horace Mann’s approach of extra learning which may be too pressurizing on students.

The idea of homework is not all-embracing to me in all its entirety, as there are days that I just need to go back home after a long day of school and just relax and have some free time. I know it’s a hard pill to swallow but be rest assured that there’s some good to homework nonetheless. However, on the other hand, sending work home for kids to do isn’t all so bad. The children are getting more skills and work reinforced in their learning process. Homework can lead kids’ children to know how to be more self-disciplined, independent, and to be more responsible about their work, to get more revisions for upcoming tests. Homework also helps to enforce better preparation for great grade marks for an upcoming exam. You may never know that piece of homework that gave you more knowledge. It may be the reason why you made it to your dream school or job. Homework may be a pain, however, if properly administered by the teachers, in the long run, it’s pretty helpful. Please bear in mind that I do understand the need for quality studies and progressive learning but my argument is not about making school shorter or less quality, it is about administering the necessary homework tasks to students with less pressure and it should strike a balance with their other life routines.

With these points of mine, I hope I can manage to convince you that excessive and unnecessary homework should be banned to allow a focus on the student’s main tasks and also a balance with their leisure times.

I have always wondered about homework and why it is necessary. I chose homework as my research project and read a book, a website, created a poll and survey, as well as conducted a personal interview with a fellow student at my school.
