Homework Words
Words related to homework.
Below is a massive list of homework words - that is, words related to homework. The top 4 are: schoolwork , classroom , teacher and practice . You can get the definition(s) of a word in the list below by tapping the question-mark icon next to it. The words at the top of the list are the ones most associated with homework, and as you go down the relatedness becomes more slight. By default, the words are sorted by relevance/relatedness, but you can also get the most common homework terms by using the menu below, and there's also the option to sort the words alphabetically so you can get homework words starting with a particular letter. You can also filter the word list so it only shows words that are also related to another word of your choosing. So for example, you could enter "schoolwork" and click "filter", and it'd give you words that are related to homework and schoolwork.
You can highlight the terms by the frequency with which they occur in the written English language using the menu below. The frequency data is extracted from the English Wikipedia corpus, and updated regularly. If you just care about the words' direct semantic similarity to homework, then there's probably no need for this.
There are already a bunch of websites on the net that help you find synonyms for various words, but only a handful that help you find related , or even loosely associated words. So although you might see some synonyms of homework in the list below, many of the words below will have other relationships with homework - you could see a word with the exact opposite meaning in the word list, for example. So it's the sort of list that would be useful for helping you build a homework vocabulary list, or just a general homework word list for whatever purpose, but it's not necessarily going to be useful if you're looking for words that mean the same thing as homework (though it still might be handy for that).
If you're looking for names related to homework (e.g. business names, or pet names), this page might help you come up with ideas. The results below obviously aren't all going to be applicable for the actual name of your pet/blog/startup/etc., but hopefully they get your mind working and help you see the links between various concepts. If your pet/blog/etc. has something to do with homework, then it's obviously a good idea to use concepts or words to do with homework.
If you don't find what you're looking for in the list below, or if there's some sort of bug and it's not displaying homework related words, please send me feedback using this page. Thanks for using the site - I hope it is useful to you! 🐘

11 vocabulary homework ideas and how to motivate students to do it, by: vocab gal.
Homework is such a valuable formative assessment for both teachers and students, and yet students are motivated* by many different factors when it comes to their desire to actually complete the work. In this article, I'm sharing how to motivate students to do their homework and 11 vocabulary homework ideas and worksheets that work in grades 1–12. Plus, preview and grab my 7 Options for Vocabulary Homework Kit .

How to motivate students to do their homework.
As a teacher, I try to concentrate students’ learning on activities done in class, because asking some students to complete work at home can be daunting. Many times in my career I have been discouraged when more than half the class does not return to class with their homework assignment complete.
Yet we only have so many minutes with our students, and we need them to practice the concepts and skills they are learning until the knowledge becomes ingrained. Most students have a homeroom, study hall, or other downtime during the day in which they could complete activities, they just have to be motivated to do it.
Many studies cite “student choice” as one of the most important factors in inspiring students to learn. When students have the opportunity to select what questions to answer, what activity to complete or what role to play, they tend to feel more comfortable and confident about performing.
Additionally, research shows that when students are dedicated to a task important to them, like improving their video game scores, or optimizing their success on a playing field, they will go to great lengths to improve. While probably not as meaningful as their video game level, students will be more excited to answer questions about themselves than a generic worksheet.
By providing students with both choice and a topic that is personally meaningful, homework can be a great learning exercise as well as an important formative assessment.
Steps to Ensure Students Complete Homework
There are a few other motivating factors that can help establish homework as a meaningful part of a student’s educational experience. Here are suggested steps a school, parish, department, or teacher might take to ensure successful homework completion.
Step One First, confirm that students have a strong rapport with their teacher(s). While it is difficult to cultivate a deep relationship with each student, teachers should strive to show students that they value their students and are committed to helping them learn and grow to their fullest potential. I would encourage teachers not to assign homework for the first few weeks of school until they develop a classroom community of respect and appreciation for learning.
Step Two Second, once the classroom community has been established, teachers should specifically explain the importance of homework as a way of deeply ingraining knowledge. Teachers should also make it clear that homework is a meaningful formative assessment where both they and their students can understand what students know and where there are knowledge gaps.
Step Three Third, some students may be quite unhappy when being mandated to do specific work. Therefore, teachers should stress the choices a student gets when completing their homework and that students get to complete the work that best reflects their own sense of self.
Step Four Finally, the teacher should praise students individually, as well as praise the class when homework is turned in on time. Many students thrive on positive reinforcement and also many may feel guilt if they let their classmates or teacher down. Additionally, as many teachers know, a word of encouragement or a small sticker can make the difference to many.
How to Respond When Homework is Not Completed
When at last it comes time for homework collection, there will be students who did not complete the assignment, no matter how well it was set up. Teachers can again encourage students who did not complete the homework in time to think about what may motivate them to complete it. If a student seems to dislike direct mandates, providing support such as, “I know that you value your learning and will find a way to demonstrate your abilities,” might be more effective than, “Turn in your paper by Thursday or it’s a zero!”
For others who seem driven by the need to please or help others, teachers might encourage students by stating, “I’m disappointed that you weren’t able to complete your work on time, and I know you will submit your work in order to show us both what you know and understand,” might work better than, “Don’t you want the credit for this assignment?”
Vocabulary Homework Ideas for Students
For this post, I have a few homework assignments that model these ideas. Both in my new It's All About Me vocabulary practice page, and my tried-and true, 7 Options for Vocabulary Homework bundle, students are motivated to continue their learning because they have both choice and a focus on themselves, a topic in which they are already invested.
My new It's All About Me Vocabulary Activity tasks students with answering a series of questions about themselves using vocabulary words in context. On the first page of this download students will list their vocabulary words and write their own brief definitions. On the second page student will answer eight prompts. Each response should include at least one of the vocabulary words from their list in context . In each of their answers students must underline the context clues that would help someone unfamiliar with the word understand what it means.

With the 7 Options for Vocabulary Homework bundle, students can choose from a variety of fun and engaging activities for learning or reviewing vocabulary words. In addition to the homework selection sheet, the bundle includes worksheets for vocabulary homework ideas number five and six. The other vocabulary homework options can be completed on a plain piece of paper or in student workbooks.
Here are the vocabulary activities listed on the 7 Options for Vocabulary Homework handout:

#1 Say Your Words
Do you love the sound of your own voice? Do you tend to learn information by teaching others? Then try saying each of the vocabulary words, out loud and in context, to friends, family, strangers, etc. Use either your flashcards or your list of words, and make sure to get initials from someone who heard you say your vocabulary sentence. If you can’t get a signature, just explain when and how you said the sentences and we will invoke the HONOR SYSTEM! Create two sentences per word.
Do you love to write? Do you copy your notes to help you remember information? Then try writing two sentences for each vocabulary word. These can either be two individual sentences for each word or you can put all of your words together in a story. (If you write a story, you only have to use each word once). Have fun and get creative – amuse me and impress me, but make sure you use your vocabulary words in context!
#3 Write Your Words in Other Classes
As an alternative to the above “Write your Words,” use your vocabulary in your assignments for other classes – social studies essays, science notes, art descriptions, etc. Write down the vocabulary you used for this assignment (For example: On my science test I said “Newton was meritorious,” etc.). You can abbreviate your explanations slightly, as long as I understand you know the word’s meaning; remember to use each word twice.
#4 Become Your Words
Do you gesture when you talk? Is it hard for you to sit still? Then consider creating motions to go along with your words. Cry for lament , raise your arms in praise for approbation , etc. See me during class to “perform” your motions, or write them down, making sure that the connection between word, meaning, and gesture makes sense.
#5 Draw Your Words
Are you an artist? Do you constantly doodle? Then create cartoons or drawings that illustrate each word’s meaning. Create one drawing or cartoon per word and make them neat, using clean white paper (consider using recycled paper that has printing on the other side). Paperclip all your drawings together for the end of the week.

#6 Sing Your Words
Do you love to sing? Are you constantly creating your own raps? Try rewriting the lyrics to a song to incorporate each of your vocabulary words or write your own song, rap, etc. You can also write poetry; regardless of the form you choose, the words should be used in the correct context.

#7 Test Your Words
Do you want to play teacher and write the test as well as take it? Now you can! Create a vocabulary test using all the words in a variety of different types of questions. Make sure to create the answer key to the test as well.
Download the 7 Options for Vocabulary Homework bundle and have students keep the selection sheet in their binders. Now they have seven weeks of vocabulary homework assignments!
Additional Vocabulary Homework Ideas
Ultimately, establishing a culture of community and trust in the classroom, explaining the reasoning behind and the benefits of homework, and providing choice and meaningful topics can make a significant difference in completion rates. Even if homework is not completed on time, teachers can still work to connect with each student to provide motivation to complete the assignments.
As educators, we all strive to make learning exciting and applicable to our students. By setting up clear expectations and providing interesting options, we can make any homework, including vocabulary homework, meaningful and valuable to students.
*I have recently completed Gretchen Rubin’s audiobook The Four Tendencies about what motivates different groups of people. Many of the ideas about motivating students come loosely from her book as well as my own observations. I highly recommend the book to anyone wanting to learn how to better motivate themselves and others.

Is "homework" countable?
I was wondering if "homework" is countable? I remember it is an uncountable noun when I learned English in middle school.
Suppose now I would like to ask my teacher to hand back my graded "homeworks" of last three times. How shall I ask him?

"Homework" is uncountable since it is treated as a general meaning not a particular item, like "work", "money" etc.
In your case, use "assignment" instead.
May I have my last three graded assignments back please?
- Both 'work' and 'money' are countified and have well-documented plural forms. 'Homeworks' has not got the same pedigree, though some dictionaries license it with caveats. – Edwin Ashworth Jun 22, 2019 at 18:44
While I've seen the word homeworks used, I've never seen anything legitimate to indicate that it's correct. In any case, you can use the term homework assignments to refer to multiple homework items. That's a fairly common term, at least in American English.
- Thanks! But I don't ask my teacher for assignments, but my homework that I have worked out and handed to my teacher, and the homework is from last three times. How shall I ask him? – Tim May 22, 2011 at 1:39
- 1 @Tim: In American English, assignments is used for what you describe. In British English, homeworks is at least marginally acceptable — we used it at at least one school I went to, although I do remember it feeling awkward/slangy to me at first. – PLL May 22, 2011 at 8:10
- What I’ve seen to indicate it is correct is its frequent use by native speakers – Casey Nov 20, 2021 at 22:37
Traditionally, it is not countable, and most dictionaries list it as such.
However, the Merriam-Webster thesaurus (although not the Merriam-Webster dictionary) does have an entry for homeworks . Moreover, the plural form is used by at least some groups of educated native speakers.
One's best bet is to try to find out if one's audience belongs to a group that tends to use homeworks . If yes, then go ahead and use that word yourself. If not, rephrase as homework assignments or something similar.
Merriam-Webster Thesaurus
Notice that the Merriam-Webster thesaurus has the following entry :
homeworks noun plural of homework Synonyms of homeworks as in schoolwork Synonyms & Near Synonyms for homeworks schoolwork assignments, lessons, reading lectures drills, exercises, practices (also practises ) études, studies
(Interestingly, the Merriam-Webster dictionary entry does not give a plural form for homework .)
Examples of usage by educated native speakers
Such examples are not hard to find at all. For instance, American professors of linguistics, physics, and mathematics, at least, use the word homeworks quite frequently.
All of the examples below are from native speakers, as best as I can tell.
Here are five examples from linguistics professors:
Final grades will be calculated as follows: 30% for homeworks, 20% for the midterm, … Penny Eckert and Ivan A. Sag , Linguistics 1: Introduction to Linguistics (Syllabus), 2011, here . Late assignments are not accepted, but your two lowest-scoring homeworks will be dropped. Adam Jardine , Introduction to Linguistic Theory (Honors) (Syllabus), 2018, here . Homeworks are due at the beginning of class on the days indicated. Emily M. Bender, Linguistics 461: Introduction to Syntax (Syllabus), here . If turned in complete, the homeworks will be graded 8 (well below average), 9 (average), or 10 (well above average); but 0 if not done. Anthony C. Woodbury, Linguistics 306: Introduction to the study of language (Syllabus), here . Homeworks: 25% (lowest score dropped) Dani Byrd and Toby Mintz , Ling 275: Language & Mind (Syllabus), 2006, here .
Here are five examples from physics professors:
Some homeworks are 'secret' assessment exercises: General GRE, Praxis and Major Field Tests Richard Robinett, Penn State Physics Undergraduate Program Better Practices, 2010, p. 12 here . Homeworks are like sports practice Tom Moore , Teaching General Relativity with Tensors, 2006, here . These concepts can be introduced to students through labs, homeworks, and discussion questions. Brianna Billingsley and Cory Christenson, Incorporating Non-Western Contributions Into the Intro Physics Curriculum, 2019, here . With their flexible design, PhET sims are used in many ways—as demos, homeworks, or inexpensive, accessible lab alternatives—and getting started is easy with our database of over 500 activities. Katherine K. Perkins, Teaching Physics with PhET Simulations: Engaging Students and Increasing Learning (Abstract) 2012, p. 58 here . In this talk, we will outline the reforms—including consensus learning goals, “clicker” questions, tutorials, modified homeworks, and more—and present evidence of the effectiveness of these reforms relative to traditional courses. Katherine K. Perkins, Steven Pollock, Stephanie Chasteen, Steve Goldhaber, Rachel Pepper, Michael Dubson, and Paul Beale, Colorado's Transformed Upper-Division E&M and QM courses: Description and Results (Abstract) 2010, p. 119 here .
And here are five examples from mathematics professors:
Homeworks 1-3 David Blecher, here . There will be two midterm exams, weekly homeworks, and a final exam. Scott Sutherland, MAT 141: Honors Calculus 1 (syllabus), 2012, here . MIT 3.016 Homeworks W. Craig Carter, Mathematics for Materials Science and Engineers, MIT 3.016 (syllabus), 2011, (here) . Click on the link 'Problem Sets and Solutions'; you will reach this page , which is where the word homeworks appears (in the page heading). Homeworks (41/42 Track); Homeworks (51 Track) Andrew Schultz, SSEA 2006: Mathematics Track, 2006, here . All homeworks, except the first one, are due on Thursday at 3:30pm Mike Clancy and David Wagner, CS 70, Spring 2005: Discrete Mathematics for Computer Science, 2005, here .
In searching for examples, I also saw examples of similar usage by professors of comparative literature , philosophy, computer science, chemistry, and sociology.
- Even Wiktionary fails to concede the plural form as a possibility, but this is doubtless an ongoing countification (and 10 years is a substantial time for the evolution to progress). – Edwin Ashworth Nov 20, 2021 at 16:42
- American professors of physics and mathematics, at least, use the word homeworks... I wonder if I should take seriously pronouncements on quantum physics by English professors... – Greybeard Nov 20, 2021 at 18:18
- @EdwinAshworth I just looked at Wiktionary , and it says 'usually uncountable, plural homeworks '. The edit that added that note was on 5 October 2015. So indeed, things change in ten years! – linguisticturn Nov 21, 2021 at 17:18
- Whoops, I had SimpleWiktionary , which I didn't know existed. Obviously homeworks is harder. – Edwin Ashworth Nov 21, 2021 at 17:53
- @Greybeard Apologies if your comment was meant as a joke, but if it wasn't (and for the benefit of those who don't take it as a joke), the answer is, no you shouldn't. And indeed, conversely, if physics or math professors were to start making 'pronouncements' about whether a particular word is acceptable English, you shouldn't take that seriously, either. But that's not what's going on in my answer. My answer simply points out that there is a U.S.-wide, loosely connected group of educated native speakers who rather frequently and unselfconsciously use homeworks in day-to-day life. – linguisticturn Nov 21, 2021 at 18:38

HOMEWORK in sign language
Homework is definitely one of ASL 101 students' first words within the first days of classes. Such an important ASL word to add to your core vocabulary, yea.
ASL sign for HOMEWORK
How to sign "homework" in American Sign Language. Like the English word, this ASL sign is also a compound word.
Meaning: schoolwork that a student is required to do at home; schoolwork assigned to students to be completed outside the classroom.
Pronunciation/articulation: Dominant "flat O" handshape with its fingertips touching on the lower cheek near the mouth and then tapping on the upper cheek a bit away from the mouth; then dominant "S" handshape (palm orientation down) taps twice on the top of the passive "S" handshape (palm orientation down).
My hearing ASL students' eyeballs perk up whenever I use one of those other important ASL words in classroom: TEST , QUIZ , EXAM , ASSIGNMENT .
More: DEADLINE , DUE .
No homework? Ooh, ya lucky. No? So you want some extra homework? All right, you're indeed motivated. You can do some more exercises such as fingerspelling receptive skill practice or browse some tutorials in the Learn section .

Search/Filter : Enter a keyword in the filter/search box to see a list of available words with the "All" selection. Click on the page number if needed. Click on the blue link to look up the word. For best result, enter a partial word to see variations of the word.

Alphabetical letters : It's useful for 1) a single-letter word (such as A, B, etc.) and 2) very short words (e.g. "to", "he", etc.) to narrow down the words and pages in the list.
For best result, enter a short word in the search box, then select the alphetical letter (and page number if needed), and click on the blue link.

Don't forget to click "All" back when you search another word with a different initial letter.
If you cannot find (perhaps overlook) a word but you can still see a list of links, then keep looking until the links disappear! Sharpening your eye or maybe refine your alphabetical index skill. :)
Add a Word : This dictionary is not exhaustive; ASL signs are constantly added to the dictionary. If you don't find a word/sign, you can send your request (only if a single link doesn't show in the result).
Videos : The first video may be NOT the answer you're looking for. There are several signs for different meanings, contexts, and/or variations. Browsing all the way down to the next search box is highly recommended.
Video speed : Signing too fast in the videos? See HELP in the footer.
ASL has its own grammar and structure in sentences that works differently from English. For plurals, verb inflections, word order, etc., learn grammar in the "ASL Learn" section. For search in the dictionary, use the present-time verbs and base words. If you look for "said", look up the word "say". Likewise, if you look for an adjective word, try the noun or vice versa. E.g. Housework vs. Homework
What is the Difference between Housework and Homework?
What’s the difference between housework and homework? These 2 words seem identical, but they have completely different uses and meanings. In today’s lesson we will learn how to use these two words without making a mistake!
The word “housework” refers to everyday tasks or chores that a person has to do around the house. For example: washing up, cleaning the house, washing dishes, ironing – all of them are housework tasks. Housework involves maintaining living space. If you come home and it needs cleaning you just can say “I really need to do the housework tonight”. Housework is not enjoyable, but it needs to get done.
Homework refers to school/college tasks that should be done at home. Homework is set by a teacher to be completed before a certain time. Homework is a task to help a person practice what he/she learnt in class. Example: Teacher gave us difficult homework exercises and we have to finish them by Friday.
Words ‘homework’ and ‘housework’ are always used in singular form even if they refer to multiple tasks. So even if a person has many assignments to finish, it’s still only housework and homework. Both ‘homework’ and ‘housework’ are uncountable.
I have a little homework to do for tomorrow. Let’s watch a movie now.
Our teacher gave us too much homework .
She’s got so much housework today.
I did a little housework today: washing dishes, ironing and some cleaning.
Now it’s time to check your knowledge on HOUSEWORK and HOMEWORK. Choose the CORRECT WORD:
1) My teacher gave me too much ___ . I don’t know if I’ll be able to finish it on time. 2) He always helps me with ____: cleaning, washing the dishes and ironing. 3) My mom’s hands were roughened by____. She was always busy doing the chores. 4) I don’t have much Math ____ to do for tomorrow. Let’s watch a movie now. 5) I hate cleaning and washing up. Sometimes I think that I’m allergic to____.

Look up a word, learn it forever.
Any assignment you're expected to complete after school and bring back to class the next day is called homework . Many students make up excuses for not having their homework done. The "My dog ate my homework " excuse doesn't work so well in the digital age.
High school students typically have a lot of homework most days, and often that's true for younger students as well. In college, an increasing amount of school work is done outside of class, as homework (even if you do it in the library, a cafe, or a dorm). Homework originally referred to any work done at home, including cooking and cleaning. The first example of the "school work" meaning dates from the late 1880s.

If you compare Japan to any western country, you’ll notice that we have a lot in common. Why is this? Japan has been influenced by western countries like the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, especially after their Meiji Era in 1912. Before any influence, Japan had a stricter government and social rules to the point where everyone was probably walking on eggshells. Western counties were barely growing and establishing themselves in America at the time.Although still strict, Western countries weren’t as strict as Japan. They were more about freedom and democracy and were going through some big changes. To what extent did Japan gain positive influence from Western cultures? It ought to be considered that Western cultures influenced Japan in a positive way.
Firstly, Western culture improved how Japan does marriages. According to Mitchell Leong, oved how Japan does marriages. According to Mitchell Leong, "husbands and wives rarely shared a romantic, loving relationship but were simply matched as a way to advance the families’ economic and social positions." and "Again with the samurai class, political marriages were still a relevant part of society in order to maintain or increase their social standing". This evidence shows that before western influence, marriages in Japan were arranged and only meant to raise a family's status or make them richer; there was no love between the two parties at all. This is important because it shows the flaws in Japanese marriages and how they can be improved. Mitchell Leong then states that "nowadays, men and women begin to form relationships through love, and the political or economical reasons are less significant". This proves that after western influence, Japan’s marriages were more about love and less about status and riches. The remarkable improvement from political marriages to genuine marriages where both parties love each other is amazing. This really shows the improvement that Japan has made by just taking a few notes from their western partners.
Furthermore, Japan’s modern architecture was influenced by western culture. In 2011, Mark Figgins states "Meiji architecture took much of its inspiration from European sources". This indicates that during the Meiji era, Japan took heavy inspiration from European countries. You can still find little bits of westernization in some Japanese architectural pieces. Mark Figgins also states that "nowadays Japan borrows selectively from the West, usually hiring overseas architects for a particular expertise" and "Japan was capable of creating works of architecture that stood on their own instead of copying Western styles". This evidence implies how Japan evolved from heavy inspiration to working independently with some help. Instead of copying from their Western neighbors, Japan started making their own works of architecture. If you check out their architecture before and after westernization, the improvement is beautiful.
Lastly , Japan was inspired to switch to a democracy because of western countries. The Meiji Restoration and Modernization states, "Japanese citizens began to ask for more voice in the government and for more social freedoms. During this time, Japanese society and the Japanese political system were significantly more open than they were either before or after". This proves that citizens of Japan were dissatisfied with their current political system, so they started to protest their right to vote, and because of Japan’s relationship with western countries at the time, they were open to the idea. This is one of the biggest political changes in Japan. The same article also states that "a parliament was elected beginning in 1890, but only the wealthiest one percent of the population could vote in elections. In 1925, this was changed to allow all men (but not yet women) to vote". This indicates that, just like in America, only men were allowed to vote. Japan is following in the footsteps of western nations by changing into a democracy. Although women weren’t allowed to vote yet, progress is progress. Plus, notice how they said "but not yet women," meaning that soon women will be able to vote, which is similar to western countries.
In conclusion, it should be recognized that Western cultures had a positive influence on Japan by inspiring them to change the way they approached marriages, architecture, and their political system. Some people associate "weternization" with "white washing," and I did as well when I initially began researching for this topic, but I have come to realize that Western culture's influence on Japan wasn't all that negative. Just as Japan transitioned from political marriages to love marriages, from a monarchy to a democracy, and how they used to imitate Western architecture. I don’t think Japan would be where it is today if it weren’t for their inspiration for Western culture.

You didn't ask for a critique, but I'll offer it anyway: I'd consider your essay to be very culturally biased . You state several times that Japanese society as been "improved", but that's a judgement of a westerner who thinks their own culture is the best. A university-level professor would assuredly take issue with that attitude.

‘grease is the word’: greeley central high to present popular high school-based show thursday-saturday, musical premiered in chicago in 1971; blockbuster movie opened 7 years later.

Later this week, 90 cast, crew and musicians at Greeley Central High School will present a well-known and beloved show based on an early 1970s musical and a hit movie later in the decade.
“Grease” will cruise into Greeley Central for four performances Thursday-Saturday at the high school auditorium. “Grease” was originally a musical, opening in Chicago in 1971. Seven years later, the story and the “high-energy” show became part of pop culture with the release of the 1978 movie starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.
“In the show, you’ll find a lot of little things that were popular in the 1950s, ‘The Twist’ and ‘The Mashed Potato,'” said Maya Cooney, a Central junior who is in the show as a member of the Pink Ladies ensemble. “We’re keeping it true to that time and putting our own twist on it. We don’t want to copy the movie. We want to keep things super timeless and keep choreography everyone will recognize.”
Central’s show schedule is 7 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and a 1 p.m. matinee Saturday. Tickets are $8 for students and $10 for adults. Tickets are available online on the Greeley Central website, www.greeleyschools.org/greeleycentral , or at bit.ly/GCHSGrease23 .

Set in 1959 at fictional Rydell High, the musical and movie tell a coming-of-age story, according to director Brion Humphrey, a Central theater and drama teacher. The high school’s production is based on the musical with a book, music and lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey.
Humphrey said Greeley Central had to acquire permission to use two songs from the movie in its production: “Hopelessly Devoted To You” and “You’re The One That I Want,” which were not in the musical version.
“I think it gets some negative connotation sometimes because everyone focuses on the idea that Sandy has to change herself,” Humphrey said. “For me, it’s more of discovering who you are, and it’s OK to grow and flourish in a way when society has been pushing you down.”
Humphrey said the show involves a performing cast of about 45 students, 34 student crew members, four stage management staff and six members of the orchestra. Three of the orchestra members are Central students — Leonardo Pompa Dominguez (bass), Jack Patrick (drums) and Vidal Lucero (percussion) — and one is University of Northern Colorado student Christian Longoria (saxophone). Central choir teacher and director Richard Green will play guitar, and orchestra teacher and director Elisabeth Richardson will play the piano.
In addition to Humphrey, the show director, the production will be led by dance teacher Christy O’Connell-Black, orchestra director Doug Farr and the Heath Middle School orchestra and choir director Michael O’Brien handling vocal direction.
At Greeley Central, senior Alyson Toews plays Sandy . Junior Will Mathews plays Danny Zuko, Sandy’s love interest and leader of the Burger Palace Boys. In the movie, Zuko and his pals were known as the T-Birds. Mathews’ brother, Jeb, recently had a leading role in Greeley West High’s production of “Matilda.”

Central senior Markus Rodriguez-Intulaksana is cast as Kenickie, Danny’s best friend and member of the Burger Palace Boys.
Junior Maleea Hurtado Hamby plays Rizzo, lead of the girl group the Pink Ladies. The other named Pink Ladies are Cecily Mash (Marty), Ainsley Haggin (Frenchy) and Gabby Luce (Jan).
The named Burger Palace Boys are Connor Fay (Sonny), Aaron Smith (Doody) and Giovanni Rangel (Roger).
Cooney, 17, is also the dance captain of the show, assisting choreographer O’Connell-Black and teaching dances to other performers. She began dancing when she was in seventh grade, and she started formal ballet a year later.
Cooney said all of the performers are involved in dance numbers at various levels. She called the dancing throughout the show “high energy,” including a dance contest held during the scene at the prom.

“That is definitely something to look forward to,” Cooney said.
Four male students are featured in the “Greased Lightnin” number: Dante Parlin, Coen McCall, Luis Becerra and Everett Mash.
“We wanted to capture the iconic and fun dances from the movie,” Cooney said. “We took some stuff from ‘Greased Lightnin” in the movie and pulled inspiration from other places. The dances are clean, focused and fun.”
There wouldn’t be “Greased Lightnin'” or other key moments in the show without a classic car. Lee’s Towing in Milliken donated a 1957 Studebaker to the school for use in the show. The production also received use of other classic cars and the old JB’s Drive-In on 8th Avenue for a photo shoot as part of promotions for “Grease.”
“The process itself has been really high energy and super positive,” Humphrey said. “We ran into at least two snow days. We were playing catch up a little bit. There’s been an excitement within the cast, and they’ve pulled it together really well.”
